Stuart Avery In my wagon & not a muleteer.

Hello to all, can anyone tell me how many German prisoner of War camps there was in Cumbria. Also, is there a record kept at the National Archives. What sort of details would be on these files? I only have a name, & year of birth. My Grandmother only gave a few details.
My Father tried looking for details some years back, but did not get much joy.
Any info, or help on this would be really appreciated .

    Thanks in advance
    Stuart.

    Hi Stuart,

Have you tried the International Red Cross yet? It was through their WW1 records I found a German held at Knockaloe Camp, Isle of Man.

    Cheers

Hi Stu, just look them up on line. They still had the same role to play in WW2, only difference is I don't believe the WW2 records are on line yet. I'll see if I can find the email address I corresponded with last year. I was away to write to them as there was more info on the guy I was researching, but they were experiencing problems with their website when they wrote to me in 2014, I've just not had the time to follow it up again.

Edit: it's the international committee of the Red Cross you need, not the British red cross.

Thanks for that link, Clive - fascinating. Takes some time to load, but worth the wait.
I found the camp near where I lived as a child - never knew it was there at the time.
And the camp in Otterburn which sent workers to my uncle's farm.
I hope Stuart finds what he was searching for.

Camp 696 - Warwick Camp, Duranhill Road, Carlisle

There are books about Camp 1 and Camp 103 -

Camp 1 - They Call It U-Boat Hotel by Simon Crump - http://www.grizedale.org/shop/book/7246
Camp 103 - Moota, Camp 103 - The Story of a Cumbrian Prisoner of War Camp, by Gloria Edwards - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Moota-Camp-103-Cumbrian-Prisoner/dp/0955184509

The National Archives has records on the following:

FO 939/82 - 1 Officers Camp, Grizedale Camp, Hawkshead, Westmoreland
WO 166/17820 - 1 Prisoner of War Camp at Grizedale. German officers including generals
FO 939/99 - 13 Officers Camp, Shap Wells Hotel, Shap, Cumberland
FO 939/156 - 76 Working Camp, Merry Thought Camp, Calthwaite, Cumberland
FO 939/274 - Exhibition: 103 Camp, Moota Camp, Cockermouth, Cumberland

With the exception of the camps at Grizedale and Shap (both of which were officers camps), each of the other camps will have a number of smaller hostels associated with the main camp. These were often used to house men who were working locally, and could house from 25 - 300 men. The records at the National Archives should provide details of these hostels - locations, number of men, etc.

The ICRC will probably have inspection reports for most of these camps, and these also provide some interesting details about the camps, written up by the Red Cross inspectors. The contact at the ICRC is - https://www.icrc.org/eng/resources/documents/misc/contact-archives-290506.htm

If you are trying to find a certain individual held at a POW Camp in the UK, I am afraid the chances of finding details are slim. The camp reports above only detail POWs who were in positions of authority (eg: Camp Leaders, etc).

At present, I don't believe the Red Cross will release information on individuals who were POWs in the Second World War, although maybe they will to relatives (I am not sure though). I understand they are working on a big project relating to WW1 records at the moment.

I hope that helps a bit.

What I could not find on any list so far is a camp or may be just a farm in Renfrewshire Scotland.
I noticed the 2 camps no. 188 and 660 both in Renfrewshire, but I am looking for a farm which had only 2 POWs from Germany from approx. late 1945 until 1948. The name of the farm was Inches Farm in Eaglesham.

Eaglesham - that's where Rudolph Hess landed on 12th May 1941.

Sold in 1982 previously the farm had been the headquarters of the Mechanised Drainage Company which was wound up in 1965.Winding up notice in the Edinburgh Gazette

Apparently, the farm where Rudolf Hess landed was the neighbouring farm to Inches Farm.

Inches Farm was probably too small to be called a POW camp, but how were the prisoners distributed to the various small farms and by whom and from where? One of the German POW’s at Inches Farm was originally captured in 1945 by the US troops in Germany, send to California to work on a cotton farm and then volunteered to be send to Scotland already knowing that he was to be working on a farm in Scotland.

Inches Farm wasn't a PoW camp it was simply one of hundreds of farms which took German and Italian labour because the British labour market was bare with most being in uniform at the time. PoWs were fed better than their counterparts who stayed in the camps eating the same rations as civilians etc. Anyhow heres a relevant question asked on agriculture workers in General.;-

I can't ask my uncle about it, because he died 2 years ago aged 99. But I remember him telling us how he had German workers, and some of them stayed on after the war and married local girls.
They probably ate better than we folk in the towns, we used to be given eggs from the farm which were preserved in some way ? isinglas?
They had plenty of lamb veg and fruit.
For the prisoners, much better than being sent back to the fighting!

Hello. New here. I have recently tried to discover the origin of my Grandfather (whom I never knew and my father never knew). My Grandmother (now deceased) was working in a London B&B in July 1949 and when she returned home she announced she was pregnant, but she refused to name the father for fear of what her parents might do. The only thing she revealed before her death some years ago was that his name was Joseph. We assumed he was English, but earlier today we received the results of a DNA test and it turns out my Grandfather was German, and not just partial German, but a full German. Does anyone know why a full German would be staying in a London B&B in 1949 so soon after the war? I'm afraid to ask this but is there a strong possibility that my Grandfather (Josef) was a Nazi and was possibly in a POW camp in Britain, released after the war and decided to stay in Britain? Was London already a multicultural community in 1949 and accepted Germans?

    Thank you for any advice.

Many ex-POWs, displaced persons remained in Britain after the war. For example, the former Manchester City goalkeeper Bert Trautmann had been in the German army in WW2, was captured and became a POW. He had a non-Nazi "B" status and refused repatriation after release, married and settled in Britain becoming the legendary goalkeeper remembered to this day.

I know of a German which was a POW in the US and Scotland (1945 until 1948), was released to Germany by the British and had strong plan to return to Scotland together with his family soon after. Only stopped by a serious illness. He is 95 today and still remembers the good times he had at this farm in Scotland.
