Great thread you have gotten going here. Of particular interest to those who served with the 1st Canadian army in the crossing of the Rhine. some very violent combat here, over the 7 day period. Denis whitaker the CO of the Royal Highland Light infantry wrote a book telling the story of the assault called 'Rhineland' http://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=rhineland%20denis%20whitaker&source=web&cd=7&cad=rja&ved=0CFwQFjAG&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FRhineland-The-Battle-End-War%2Fdp%2F0749305886&ei=uPeoUKusFujkywGXyIDIDg&usg=AFQjCNGy1UOk-LtjCNFoiXRVoaeLnwkJ4A

The crew of this Tank must have had a lot of pull at the LAD. I dont think I have seen another picture of a Sherman with that much Track welded on

those are great notice the difference in the track installation on the firefly they lost the co-driver so they didnt have the coax is that correct? this crew didnt have the luck to scrunge up needed track. Of coarse to get the track you had to have knocked out Shermans the ironic part I guess.
I have never seen anything on the effectivness of the applicique is there any real studies on it.

Welcome German Boy From the Rhine, did you know that one of the Dambuster Lancaster's AJ-Z fell in the area of Emmerich just off the A3. Might be worth searching that area?

Matt - Unfortunately Whitakers book does not cover the fight for Emmerich.

Re the tanks: They're tanks from 27 Cdn Armoured Regiment in support of the 9th Cdn Bde (see the report Report no.19, Historical Section Army HQ, mentioned above, on page 83 (alinea 119 and onwards)).

Sherman 17-pdr Firefly at the same location in 's Heerenberg (Emmericher Straat)

After 30 March 1945 it was as if someone had "removed the clutter from the saltpot and the salt began pouring out". The front became fluid again: Bevrijding Achterhoek in kleur / Liberation Route East Holland in full-color - April 1945 - YouTube a few days later the 3rd Cdn Division reached Zutphen on the River IJssel, which was taken on 8 April after several days of stiff fighting WW2 1945 libertion ZUTPHEN part1 - YouTube and WW2 1945 libertion ZUTPHEN part2 - YouTube.

Love that armored dozer picture. Is that a Canadian field improvisation? Is doesn't look like any of the others I've seen, especially the driver position.
Looks like a cable operated blade with the typical cable drum at the rear.

  13. Patrick - At that stage, I think they were 'running like hell', abandoning all of their equipment.

    Ok, maybe.

  15. There was a counter-attack though, but that was earlier on. It hit the forward positions of the Winnipeg Rifles along the Emmericher Strasse. See alinea 96 of the Report.

so on east side. Between station and Lander Bridge ?

I'm so embrassed you would think that the title "Rhineland" would have been a clue. Read it years ago obiviosly must not have a very good memory.
Patrick you're getting into some pretty heavy stuff now be careful how you dig.

  19. Patrick - I mixed up the road names in my earlier post o_O. It was along the 's Heerenberger Strasse on the west side of the 'old' town. The area has been overbuild by post-war suburbs. Just see alinea's 94 and 96 of the Report. I think it was only a small affair - probably one company, maybe even less, supported by a couple of tanks.

GPO is right - Be carefull with what you dig up - 'postponed death' is what we call this stuff over here in Holland.

    Thanks Stolpi !
That helps me. Its to bad that tis area is not the same than 1945. Everywhere houses tody. Its no good for digging. But in the north-east, it must be a bridge cross the "lander or landwehr" (rivolet). There i can digging. I hope the Pioniers losing things in 1945.
