Only unit that comes to mind was just used as Infantry in 1945, 2.Marine-Infanterie-Division * 2.Marine-Infanterie-Division Also 1 Marine Inf Div. http://www.feldgrau.com/1kms.html The 1.Marine-Infanterie-Division was organised like a normal Heer division of the "neuer Art 45" type. * see John Russell's book No Triumphant Procession about their battle with 53rd Welsh Div.
Probably already known... (Adams last post jogged my memory) German frogman from Marine Einsatz Kommando 65 tried to destroy thw two Arnhem bridges at the end of September. Axis History Factbook: Marine-Einsatz-Kommandos MEK Marineeinsatzkommandos There's a article about them in ATB's Op Market Garden. Cheers
Just to get back to the thread topic it appears that the Wehrmacht/Kriegsmarine accorded no advantage to forming a Marine formation specifically for assault purposes and therefore no large-scale formations for this role.
Drew, there's a thread on those frogmen , I've just posted link to it on your profile. As for German Marines & amphibious operations, I can't see how it'd fit in with Blitzkreig style battle. I'm sure German Marines were for coastal defence & that's about it. Marine-Schützen-Brigade Nord Marine-Schützen-Brigade Nord Formed 11.44 in Husum, to protect the North Sea coast.
Good one Owen, no idea why I didn't check Feldgrau first. They do seem to be the closest thing so far.
They might be close but no cigar due to the fact that these formations were being formed just as the Reich was close to collapse. I dont have references at present but I'm willing to bet that these formations were composed of support personnel from the Kriegsmarine and crews with no ships. I doubt if they were capable of much in terms of land combat never mind Marine Assault which was the original topic .
True, I skimmed the dates - and dimly hadn't registered they're the same chaps FJ mentioned (post #3).
I doubt if they were capable of much in terms of land combat Ger , have a read of that book I mention, No triumphant Procession, they put up a good fight. Sorry, I too didn't see post #3, sorry FJH
True, I skimmed the dates - and dimly hadn't registered they're the same chaps FJ mentioned (post #3). Poop & Owen: Not a problem, every once in a while I do manage to get a little wood on the ball..........no need to apologize as I am sure most of what I post is skimmed and dismissed due to my propensity to post foolishness.
