When I arrived in Benouville, near Pegasus Bridge, on D-Day there was a burned out Jerry truck at the T junction of the Benouville-Caen road and the road down to the bridge, it was facing towards Le Port. On the cab doors were the remains of a painted yellow palm tree. I have not been able to identify the unit, but presumed it had been part of the Afrika Korps. Has anyone any suggestions?

Does sound like the symbol for the Africa Corps, a palm tree with a swastika in the middle of the trunk. I think the German army still use the palm tree (sans swastika obviously).

That could be the 21. Panzerdivision, which was both in Africa and Normandy.
See here as well (Truppenkennzeichen - sign of the 5. leichte Div.)

They do - with the Bundeswehr-style "revised" eisenkreuz in its place.

Which logo raised more than a few eyebrows a while back when it appeared on German vehicles in Afghanistan IIRC?;)

Thanks Heimbrent, that seems to make sense as they were certainly in the area and remained in front of 3rd Div for ages.

I heard tell you had to take it off, along with the cessation of the T-shirt "My grandfather didn't make it this far East"
