Hi im kay, im new to world war 2 talk and as you can probably guess i am looking for help. I am searching for a George L Lovelock, 1st Wilts Regt. i have photos of him in Egypt. Cairo and Mustapha barracks are mentioned. i also have photos of him on the war memorial at East Grafton, Wiltshire. I have always believed him to have been shot by an enemy sniper after the war, can anyone help me? any info would be very gratefully received. ta.

    Hi Kay,

    Here's his entry on CWGC:

    CWGC :: Certificate :poppy:

THat says he was in the 2nd battalion. I'm no expert on the Italian campaign but looking where he is buried I would say he died of wounds or in an accident as the cemetery is just north of Naples.

tad confusing as that , as he listed as 2nd Bn & they were in Germany in 1945.
1st Bn were in India in 1945.

You may right about him dying of wounds as the 2nd Wilts were in 5th Div which went on to NWE before the war ended on May 2nd '45 - leaving some wounded at Hospitals - probably the 98th Gen - in the Naples area - Caserta being a near suburb of Naples where the cemetery was built early on in the Campaign.

Forgotten when the 5th Div left Italy as my last recollection of them was at Anzio
breakout in May '44 which is a long time to be wounded as he would have been sent on to Blighty long before then ....
    Cheers

If he was a bandsman I'm wondering if he was destached from parent unit & at Alex's HQ at Caserta for all the ceremonial stuff.

You're right Tom, the Bn last actions in Italy were during the Anzio breakout, when Sgt Rogers was killed earning a VC.

More than likely he was at Caserta as a bandsman - not so much for Alex's ceremonials but for the Egoistic Clark's dinner time music.....

    Cheers

His service records will probably say who he was attached to in Italy and then that units war diary might explain why.

It happened a hell of a lot in the 1940 France war diaries with infantrymen attached to a RE unit for example and employed as Batmen. I've also seen them employed in random units as drivers for Padres. The same thing still happens in todays British forces.

    Pre-war,
1st Bn in Egypt from 1930 to 1932. Shanghai for several months then onto Singapore until 1936. Then onto India.

2nd Bn went to Palestine in 1936 until end of 1937 then back to UK.

Some info from Kenrick's THE WILTSHIRE REGIMENT about Evans, Colonel of the Regiment.

Just looking at Paul Reed's photos & I'm sure this is Lovelock's headtone in background.
I can read Lovelock in 2nd pic.

I'd say it was as I checked cemetery plan for his grave plot number & compared it with Hooton's who is visable in Paul's photo.

Only other Wilts chap in that cem is in a different plot.

I suggest getting a copy of THE WILTSHIRE REGIMENT 1914-1959 by Martin McIntyre.
    https://www.thewardrobe.org.uk/prodInfo.php?prod_id=165

I've just been flicking through my copy & there are some great photos of the 1st Bn Wilts Regt , Pre-War in Shanghai & one of a Parade at Mustapha Barracks Alexandria 22/12/30.

I suggest that Lovelock is he did his time with 1st Bn, left army but as was on Reserve list was recalled in 1939 , as his old Bn was in India he was sent to 2nd Bn in UK.
I still think as he was a rather good musician he stayed in Italy at GHQ when the rest of 2nd Bn went to Germany .
I know we sound like a stuck record on this forum but might be worth getting his service records , even though there is a long wait.
