I am trying to find military records for the above. He was born in 1924 and joined the army after 1940 we believe. All the info that we have is that he started out in signals but apparently was pretty hopeless with that and so they moved him to the new AFPU when that was set up and he was assigned to Unit 5. We still have some of his photos that I guess he wasn't supposed to have kept copies of. He saw the D-Day Landings, the liberation of Paris and the liberation of Belsen. He took photos at some of the war trials, and also took photos of Montgomery. I can see on the Imperial War Museum section of the AFPU that there's a Sgt. George Laws who looks exactly like George Lauder, so am now going to try that on Forces War Records, but if anyone knows anything else about this unit, I would be grateful! Thanks!! Lindsay
Hi Lindsay The only place to get military records is from the MOD, nowhere else. FWR do not hold them, nor do any pay-per-view sites. Get a copy of military service records Lesley
Hello Lindsay, Are you sure the last name is Lauder and not Laws? There are no films or photos by a George Lauder at the IWM, which is a pretty good indication that no George Lauder was a cameraman or photographer with the AFPU... Maybe you could post a few of his photos, of Monty for example, and we'll probably be able to tell you the name of the photographer to whom they are credited. Michel
Dear Lindsay, and all. Hopefully not a red herring. Lauder is a family name (modern parlance) that has historic Jewish links so don't discount the possibility of a name change (to Laws) either chosen or advised. Good luck with finding a definitive answer. Kind regards, always, Jim.
Lindsay1968, Here's a photo of Sergeant George Laws of 5 AFPU from Cameramen of War by Ian Grant (they worked together during Operation Goodwood. George Lauder's name is not mentioned in the book.
Two different men : George Edward James LAWS 1916 - 2009 George Kenneth Scott LAUDER 1924 - 1992 Sergeant G.K. Lauder is accredited with two images in the I.W.M. collection GENERAL MCCREERY'S VISIT TO THE BAOR 'BISLEY' SHOOTING RANGE GENERAL MCCREERY'S VISIT TO THE BAOR 'BISLEY' SHOOTING RANGE Sgt. Lauder appears to have served with No.5 Army Film & Photographic Section post-war. All would be confirmed with a copy of his service records. Good luck with your research
Excellent find Guy! I missed those two photos by GK Lauder. By the way, Sgt Laws also came from R Sigs. Michel

Just came across this thread the IWM actually hold hundreds of Photographs credited to Sergt G K Lauder . Just input `LAUDER` as below and the images start at image six and go to around page 9 ? Search our collection | Imperial War Museums Kyle
That's great Kyle ! This search can be refined by clicking on the photographer's name ("Creator") to show only photos shot by "Sergeant G.K. Lauder" (as opposed to all photos whose description contains the word "Lauder"). 211 of them apparently, all shot within the 1945-1989 time frame: Search our collection | Imperial War Museums One only has to find one such photo to find the rest, but I somehow miserably failed to do so ! Michel
And there's a trick, because he also is listed as "Lauder GK (Sergeant)", yielding 17 additional photos: Search our collection | Imperial War Museums so I guess searching for just "Lauder" as you did is the safe way to go so as not to miss any of his photos, in case yet another way is used to classify his pics ! Michel
Tony, this is great, thank you. I always thought you had to have a service number to request this. Thanks for the info!
