I'm looking into Pte Alfred Storer (1427580) who is on the CWGC as serving with the General Service Corps on 15th September 1942.

He's buried in one of the village cemeteries but I'm curious what the General Service Corps did as I'd never heard of them before and what they would have been doing mid September 1942.

    Thanks
    Vic

    Vic -
The General Service Corps was instituted in early '42 to receive new recruits into te army - teach then how to March - Salute - fire various weapon - and to test them to see where they would best serve the Army - for six weeks - then they were sent to where they were needed in Infantry - Armour - Artillery - or the Pioneer corps and as his number indicates -142***** he joined in late summer '42....

Not too unusual as we had two casualties in training -and one suicide - many were caught in air raids etcs - Cook especially were subject to "Friendly Fire"
