I'm hoping someone can help me translate this letter/reference to English for me please - it relates to a German Jewish soldier in the Pioneer Corps - Friendly "Enemy Alien" Paybooks I can see mention of the 5 Company Tirailleurs Nord-Africains, so an idea of where they were would also be useful - normally I'd resort to google translate but handwriting makes it awkward Cheers
It should read: "CERTIFICATE Captain Couprie (?), commander of the 5th Coy North-African Tirailleurs, confirms that Pte [so and so] of the British Army has been employed as interpreter and liaison agent for his company. He has fullfilled this function to full satisfaction and with his conscientious work has contributed to the the smooth running of this service. [...] [signed] Capt Couprie, commander of the 5th Coy"
It looks as though its an attestation from the Captain of the 5th Company of the 2nd Groupement du Genie - probably a Regiment or Battalion of Engineers or as in the official stamp at the bottom Pioneer Company in which Max worked as a translator. As its dated 5 Dec 1944, I would assume it was probably in Southern France and his skills would be to possibly translate anything they found in German re instructions etc etc as they started to encroach into Germany as they moved North and East So in essence he would have possibly been working as a translator for both the Pioneer Company and the North African Riflemen as the letter is written by the Pioneer Company on behalf of the Captain commanding the North African Riflemen Stolpi types faster than I do TD
