I'm intrigued. Can think of a number of reasons, two of which relate to Gravity and a Politician...and there are more.

I was thinking the second one with their link to the Vulcan. Newton's not that controversial.

....but aeroplanes and aerobatics are all about Gravity.....G forces and all that.

I agree the latter (Margaret Hilda Roberts) is more apt?

Grantham was also voted the most boring place in England a number of years ago so could probably do with a bit of cheering up anyway!

    Might be of interest.

Boeing test pilot Tex Johnson rolled the prototype 707 on one of its first demonstration flights and said he was well aware that it was only a 1 G manuever well within the flight envelope of the plane. I'd guess the Vulcan wouldn't be stressed at all by a roll, but of course it wasn't brand new like the 707 was at the time.

    Kevin.

I have seen it....was the Vulcan in RAF service at the time?....was the aircraft on the civilian register at the time?

I have lived in proximity of RAF Scampton while the Vulcan was in squadron service but I have never seen a Vulcan being rolled...perhaps I have missed something...others might be more informative.

Will be interesting to see the result of the CAA investigation.

Latest news...according to Look North the video was made up of frames taken ..... but the originator stresses that the roll did take place over farmland near Grantham.

Now for an informed source via the prune forum....Yellow Sun

"The aircraft were not cleared for aerobatics in service use.The Vulcan would produce a tidy barrel roll but;if;it was done,it was very rare. The Nav and the AE team would be not likely to share the pilot's enthusiasm.to explore the envelope. The aerobatics seen at air displays were almost without exception carried out by manufacturer's test pilots and there is a big difference in what you might try at display weights and what is prudent in an operational airframe".

It would appear that Avro test pilots and some RAF carried out these manoeuvres but were told by the RAF to cease the practice.

Another poster,Barksdale Boy agreed and declared "spot on not after 1967"; indicating that the practice was banned after 1967.

The other point that surely arises is that no air force would wish to accept delivery of an aircraft which may have run the risk of being stressed by the manufacture's test pilots

Vulcan aerobatics discussed on Prune as below with contributions from Yellow Sun and Barksdale Boy

Bottom line interesting to see the Vulcan roll pre Vulcan to the sky trust.

If it did roll on its last flight then I am sure the story will come out in good time with any associated consequences.

    Kevin,

I cannot see what your point is.

I am not a member of the Prune forum but I do know that there are a number of contributors on Prune who could focus on the subject better than me or possibly you...some may have served on V bomber squadrons as aircrew or had a close association with the V force as groundcrew and hence are closer to the real gen.

Incidentally, the fact that the public were kept in the dark for the final display is may be related to
the possibility that the SY Police expected to be able to back charge the Vulcan Trust or Peel Holdings to police the function...puts the function in the same revenue source as football clubs.Additionally there are abundant locations east of and close to Finningley where aerial activity can be witnessed.

I thought the biggest issue about a Roll is whether it is becoming of a bomber. I've seen that quoted somewhere but can't remember where.
