    Dear all

Hoping to get some more help in understanding my Grandfather's service records.

While still in the UK, as Warrant Officer/Battery Sergeant Major with 133rd Field Regiment RA, my Grandfather records state:

    "Granted F/A @ 6d per diem W.E.F. 3/1/43 - 11/2/43 incl. and 16/26/2/43 inclusive"

In the next column against this entry it says "Field"

    The following entry states:

    "Granted F/A @ 6d per diem W.E.F. 27/2/43 - 23/3/43 incl."

I am presuming that 16/26/2/43 means from 16/2/43 to 26/2/43 and that these two entries indicate that he was in the field from 3/1/43 through to 23/3/43 (apart from a gap of four days).

Has anyone any thoughts on what he might have been doing to be eligible for a field allowance? I should say that Drew5233 has kindly sourced the Regiment's War Diaries up to end of 1942 and has the diary for 1943 on its way to me so this may shed some light on my question.

    Many thanks

    Chris

Looks like he was in charge of a reinforcement unit - landing in Algiers - and returning to the UK by the same ship as he was merely a chaperone

Tom, thank you so much. Might I ask how you deduced that? Should it have been blatantly obvious to me?

It does answer another question for me - I have my Grandfather's Africa Star. However the elements of his service record that I can interpret have him landing in Egypt in late August 1943 before going on to join the 11th (HAC) Regiment, RA. He would not have been eligible on that basis for the Africa Star.

    Many thanks for first-hand knowledge

Quite right on th Africa Star as in both cases he was beyond the date to qualify and IF he did land at Algiers - then he had to join a unit to quailfy

February '43 the initial landings of Torch (NOV '42) were being reinforced prior to another Corps landing in March - for 1st Army...

    Cheers
