I know this is an old thread, but I recently read "The Regiment" for the first time. It was an interesting experience, partly because of the way the book was written, but also because I'd been out of my history hobby for almost ten years. I can't put my finger on it, if it was me being ten years older reading old war accounts and having an older perspective/understanding on things, or the book itself. Probably a combination of both, but it was a moving experience, and a big influence to get back into my passion for history!
I’ve been a fan of Farley Mowat for a while, but just got round to reading ‘And No Birds Sang’ while on vacation. An amazing read. His account of sharing his rum with the dying German Paratrooper was strangely and deeply moving for me. Highly recommended.
