That made me think about F Troop - used to love that series as a kid.

Never figured out which cavalry regiment F Troop belonged to. Certainly not the 9th or 10th Cav (Bufffalo soldiers).

B/W film actor (cowboy) Bob Steele was Trooper Dufffy in F-Troop. He was later in the Clint Eastwood flick, Hang 'em High.

So many great guest stars. One of the best was Don Rickles as a psycho efficiency expert named Bald Eagle sent by the Apache main office because the Hekawis were behind on their massacre count.

I can still hum the theme tune. Weird the things we remember.

There was never a greater Native American warrior than Bucolic Buffalo.

Pure guess, one of my favourite films of all time, Twelve O'Clock High?

I shouldn’t really be guessing, given I love this film, but I confess to not remembering every line. :D

My other idea was “The War Lover”. (hedge my bets, moi?)

Hint: Said by cold and hungry infantrymen as planes were flying overhead. :)

Nope. Another hint is that they were in Bastogne.

Battleground (1949). I think it was said by Marshall Thompson while the squad was sitting by the side of the road at the end of the movie.

    Yes.

Dad said that the movie depicted the conditions really well. He wasn't at Bastogne but he was in Belgium that winter.

Major Franklin: Pappadimos, have you got your silencer?
    Pvt. Spyros Pappadimos: Yes.
Major Franklin: Then use it. Shoot the laundry boy.
    Maj. Baker: Are you crazy?
Major Franklin: And if the Major gets in your way, shoot him too. That's an order.
