Hi all. Do any of you kind folks have an electronic copy of the following map - France 1:50,000, Series GSGS 4250, Falaise I had planned to go to the British Library and copy the original and then the world went pear shaped! The one that the Library has on line doesn’t print out clear enough for me to use. I’m currently researching action around the Falaise area that my late father was involved in and managed to visit the battlefield before lockdown. Thanks in advance and stay safe. Stag
Here’s the McMaster University web site copy, you can download in two different resolutions or view on line. The high Rez copy (over 1 GB) does take time to download depending on your internet speed) Falaise
Another one from McMaster University which may interest you: Falaise, Defence Overprint - Operation Totalize, 6 August 1944 (France 1:25,000 GSGS 4347 Sheet 40/12NW)
Thanks for this. It promises to be another very useful resource. Looks like I have some work to do! Stag
as you requested the 1:50.000 Falaise at Digitalarchive Mcmaster, at the bottom you can download a JP2 (high quality) Don't know your exact plan, but here is also a great product on the Chindits page Happy Christmas.
Hi Bedee Thanks for the links, also the other map you mention. I’m just trying link the references in the war diary to find exactly where my father was during the closing of the gap as this was the other major battle he was involved with as well as the Reichswald. Merry Christmas to you and please stay safe! Ian
I live close to the Reichswald, arround 500m. What unit your father served ? maybe i have more information about that unit. Most probably under the 15th Scottish Infantry Division.
I believe I’ve already benefitted from your wonderful knowledge, you and Stolpe were kind enough a couple of years ago to show me where my father was with 147/RAC .
Ian, Merry Christmas.. This post sounded already familiar, but didn't think about your story. Great to hear that you still working on your fathers history, as you know in Falaise they had the same Enemy as in the Reichswald forrest. 84 Infanterie Division, was in August 1944 defeated. And in October OKH send this unit to our area to get some rest..... i can get you in contact with someone who is searching for his fathers story, his fathers served at the 84 Artillery unit (DEU). His father was also in Falaise and at the Brandenberg, just 500m north of the roads your fathers crossed in the Reichswald.
Merry Christmas to you and your family sir! Please Pass on my best wishes and continued gratitude to Pieter. It would be really good if you could put me in contact with the gentleman who’s father was also at Falaise and the Reichswald, anything we could do to help each other trace our history would be great. Who knows, after the virus has gone and the silliness of Brexit is over I may someday return to the area. Ian
