Since I have some time on my hands and I realised that I have a LOT of WW2 related photos taken all over Europe but none of my hometown Rotterdam it was decided to do something about this. I have no WW2 website so I'll place the photos here. Maybe the info is of use to someone? First one is not a true execution site but the site (Beukendaal) where 4 resistance fighters tried to rob food-coupon distribution centre. The Germans were expecting them however and shot three of them dead. They were: Duin, A. 12-08-1920 - 18-09-1944 Hollander, C.P. 15-05-1920 - 18-09-1944 Kwadijk, G. 14-06-1922 - 18-09-1944
10 men were shot on 20-02-1945 (Coolsingel) as reaction to the liquidation of a SD officer and his helper.
On 03-04-1945 20 prisoners were shot (Hoflaan) as reaction to the liquidation of a Major of the Dutch police (last photo )who worked with the Germans. The Germans usually ordered that the bodies of those executed should be left to show people the cost of resistance. In this case an illegal photo was taken.
On 28-11-1944 five people were shot (Boezembocht) as reaction to sabotage of the nearby railtrack. They were: Brouwer de koning, Johannes 27-10-1914 Brouwer de koning, Tijmen 05-06-1912 Heide, Jan van der 02-02-1904 Heijningen, Leonardus van 27-10-1914 Ruybroek, Hein 14-04-1912 Five others were shot for the same sabotage at a different location.
Hi Marco, very sad but interesting thread, added picture of memorial in Bakkerstaat Arnhem, to five members of the resistance executed here, but would like to know more about it, do you have any information. regards lofty.
18-10-1942 a resistance meeting (1e Pijnakkerstraat) was raided by the Germans. During the raid three people were shot dead: Hamelink, J.J. 25-07-1902 – 18-10-1942 Zwitser, E. 16-02-1914 - 18-10-1942 Est, T. Van 19-07-1915 - 18-10-1942
On 12-03-1945 20 people were shot at the location Pleinweg for the attack on a German police (SD) officer (see photo). There are two monuments now: one on the actual site, now concealed by buildings (mourning woman) and one on a visible location (falling horseman).
Hello Lofty, On 19-09-1944 these five civilians were removed by the Germans from a shelter located at Rijnkade 36: the basement of a Girl's school. The shelter also housed two wounded British soldiers of which one had already died of his wounds. It is thought the five civilians were shot because of housing the enemy or because the Germans thought they received fire from the Girl's school. One of the widows was visited by Wehrmacht soldiers two days later who had orders from the Ortskommandant to tell her the execution was a mistake.... Regards, Marco
Thanks Marco, this picture I took in 2005, any idea of the Recce connection? was one of the soldiers in the cellar Reece? regards lofty

Hi Marco, why not posting that info in one message... Limited number of uploads per message, need to add a few new ones this month and finally (not seriously) Since I am in service since Feb. 2004 I need to do something about my rank = number of messages. Regards, Marco Ps. Ommoord isn't Rotterdam. If I look outside I see de Kuip, you see cows
Very sad, but interesting. Its something that as someone just learning about Arnhem was not as aware of as the loss of our boys. The civilian losses deserve to be remembered with the same level of respect.
Ps. Ommoord isn't Rotterdam. If I look outside I see de Ku Ommoord is 'Old Rotterdam' as most of the people here are about 70 years of age and older.... I am almost the youngest :p Well I can hear the noise of the Kuip during a concert (as that is a long time ago it happened...) I think it was the Rolling Stones (small Rock group from the UK) Can't hear the public during a winning match as Feyenoord is not winning for a long time.. B) By the way... The 'Kuip ' is located on what real people from Rotterdam call just 'Zuid ' (South) as it is located on the south side of the river. The original people from Rotterdam do never mention it 'Rotterdam-Zuid'... (Rotterdam-South), like those living there do... They just named it 'Zuid' (without the mention of Rotterdam) to indicate that the part built on the south side of the river isn't a serious part of Rotterdam what so ever... Happy for me I live on the north bank But relax... I was born in Drente
Commando - sorry to learn that you actually come from Drenthe ... I'm from Friesland, raised in Groningen ('Stad') and now living in Arnhem.
Hi Commando (are you one or are you always 'going commando'?), All in good fun. I was born in a hospital on Hofplein, nothing more central in Rotterdam then that . Forums are to learn, and I am happy to assist: Feyenoord ended #2 this year with 0% of the investments the #1 made, so we are happy here. But we are going of-topic a bit.... For the rest of the members: don't worry, this is how we Dutch treat each other in good spirits Regards, Marco
Euh, Stolpi, that is how usually the ranking from 1 to 18 is decided... To keep it interesting for you English blokes (I provide to all) we became #2 because of a hired talent/reject from Man City (or was it Man U)? (be gentile to me) Regards, Marco
