Italy are favourites, but I might have a bet on Ukraine. Currently trading at 7/1 on Betfair. I haven't even heard the song, but I'm banking on them getting all the former Soviet state votes, except Russia of course.

It didn't deserve a "dikke nul" as we say over here, but it was a little unremarkable .I'd pay to watch France's entry. Where is that bottle of Ricard ?

France ought to win anyway when Italy are disqualified for doping.

Do not despair. Global Britain (Global England?) can always apply to enter the proposed Eurovision Asia Song Contest. Eurovision Asia Song Contest - Wikipedia

I have heard next years entry for Eurovision is going to be a slightly re-worked version of Brotherhood Of Man's 1976 entry now called 'Save Your Fishes For Me'

Ah dear Clive. I cannot hear that phrase in any other accent than that of the late Caterina.

    Kind regards, always,

Well it goes to show the bitterness outside our country and for some the bitterness within our country who are happy to piggyback along for the ride and knock.

Anyway the numbers that matter are nearly 60 million

Correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that, because the UK contributes a significant sum of money to Eurovision, the U.K. gets an automatic right to be in the Finals. It's a fact that, while the UK has a significant music industry, it no longer (and hasn't for a significant period of time) produces the type of song that can win this contest (because the UK would otherwise do better than nil points). That, in my mind, produces the inevitable lacklustre results. This is not an 'excuse', it's simple statistics in a contest where politics plays its role - can anyone ever remember a contest where Cyprus has not voted for Greece?.... I don't know why Germany also seems to perform badly - are they in the same position as the UK? There now appears to be a choice: stop paying good money for what appears to now comprise an annual 'national humiliation' by joining the likes of Ireland where, if you don't provide what is needed , you get eliminated in the Semi Finals.....or continue with the current approach. I watched the results and even the hosts appeared uncomfortable with the UK nil points. It's time for a change! My answer would be to stop bankrolling the contest for 2022, accept the UK could be eliminated in the Semi Finals, and see what happens - if you believe in 'self imposed schadenfreude' (if there is such a thing) then so be it. Norton did a good job last night but even he was struggling with what is now a total waste of time - it's just not funny any more.

Excellent entertainment and as usual the best song won.

Educational also. My daughters asked me who Mata Hari was after the Azerbaijan performance. They also asked where Azerbaijan was (I had to sneakily take look peak at google maps to answer that one!).

Eurovision was an absolute load of rubbish as usual. The BBC turn out drivel such as The Masked Singer and recently I Can See Your Voice, and surely I cannot be the only one who is sick and tired of all the cookery and game show programmes they churn out. I just switch it off as it's got so bad recently. It's about time the BBC stopped paying a lot of money on Eurovision and spend licence fee payers money on decent programmes.:reallymad:. I think I've mentioned on this thread a few years earlier about the obscene amount of money it pays (because they are one of the 'big five' who contribute more dosh to the programme). Some figures to make your mind boggle:

In 2012 they paid the European Broadcasting Union £310,000, a large increase on the 2009 figure of £279,805, so goodness only knows what they paid this year. On top of that there are the staff hotel and wages, not to mention the salary of the commentators. If you are not bored of this post by now, have a read of this blog from May 2018:

Well is it? No it bloody well ain't. So there.
'Nuff said, I'm off to make a cuppa.

..in this Flemish-speaking household, we thought they were singing "Natte Haring" ...and The Netherlands really did seem to be singing about broccoli.

By the sound of it, pretty much every other competitor would have to be a smackhead for the UK to stand a chance of winning, so I don't think we care that much.

    Or not...

It's not like they've ever tried to invade us or bomb us.

Now if we credited them with enough taste to expect them to vote for us, it might be a different story.

Crikey only awkward if we care about being abused (thats us Brits who are proud and support our country instead of the subliminal chips on the shoulder brigade)
