The issue of the information being free is irrelevant. Their Terms are also irrelevant as they are a publicly funded body, and therefore publicly accountable.

You are getting close to Trolling, and I'm getting bored with it.

If someone brings up a new angle or has a different opinion than you they are "trolling" now? This is the internet, you will meet people with all sorts of opinions.

Their terms are relevant and in place to avoid lawsuits, all site owners should have them in one form or another for this reason. By changing to session keys they are not taking anything away from their own database, they simply made it harder for those using a external script or CMS to function.

I assume I am correct in thinking that many members of Joe Public like Chris Harley (To name but one of many I'm sure) who's dedication and free time give them the information that makes the CWGC site what it actually is today?

For goodness sake Elven, they are 'giving' us nothing. They are providing the information that they are required to by their founding charter.

It is perhaps unfortunate that Canadian schoolboys are not required to visit the graveyards of the first world war as they might then try to look into the slaughter further and even attempt to realise that there are hundreds of thousands of casualties who would otherwise be forgotten were it not for the efforts of individuals.

A valuable tool is in the process of being removed from these individuals.

Military history in my city at least is a big thing and we were "required" to do such things. I do contribute to Canada at War, in this thread I have suggested alternatives that one might pursue, answered questions, etc.

Whats the betting that the technical issue with the new format is that they have realised that the pdf's were still available to external websites.....

Given that they put considerable effort in breaking external URL links, I think you are absolutely right. I suspect the software guys here are not too clued up. And are probably wasting tax payers money here. Canadian also.

Elven6, you are beginning to p1ss me off. Having spent considerable time (lots) and money (a bit) on my project to honour these men and women who gave their lives for freedom. Why don't you do something usefull. Freedom is at risk here.

(sorry mods, if I've stepped of of line)

If you didn't want my opinion you could just say so, no need to resort to personal attacks. You replied to my original post so I figured you were interested.

Most posters here are stating what the vast majority of those interested in the Commonwealth armies of both world wars are thinking.

In fact, I do not believe that anyone whose interest is in the casualties can believe that these changes are a good thing.

There are enough mealy-mouthed apologists in the world and sadly far too many square pegs who insist in bludgeoning themselves into round holes.

One of the things I like about this forum is that I trust the mods to do a reasonable, sensible job. It makes it such a pleasant, rewarding place most of the time. I think it is perhaps unique in war forums in that respect. My apologies to all for expressing my views, which may have offended.

I just wonder what Fabian would make of all this. Here is something some people keep to themselves. The URL to this was blocked some time ago. I hope there are no more. If anyone knows where he is buried, please say.

    Name: WARE, Sir FABIAN
    Initials: F
    Nationality: United Kingdom
    Rank: Major General
    Regiment: Imperial War Graves Commission
    Age: 79
    Date of Death: 28/04/1949
    Awards: KCVO, KBE, CB, CMG
Additional Information: L.L.D., University of Aberdeen, Legion of Honour - becoming a Grand Officer of the Order in 1938 - the Croix de Guerre, and Commander of the Crown of Belgium. Ware arrived in France in September 1914 in command of a mobile unit of the British Red Cross. He was struck by the absence of any official organisation responsible for the marking and recording of the graves of those killed, and it was in a conversation with Lt. Col. Stewart, a Red Cross Medical Assessor, that the idea of Ware taking on this task was first mentioned. The War Office recognised a need for the proper care of the graves, both in the response to demands from relatives at home and for the morale of the troops in the field. In 1915 Ware's work in recording and maintaining graves was established by the creation of the Graves Registration Commission which, under his command, left the Red Cross and became part of the Army.

Plaque unveiled in Amberley, Gloucestershire, to resident Major General Sir Fabian Ware

A distinguished founding father of wartime Remembrance has been honoured with a commemorative plaque at a church near Stroud.
The late Major General Sir Fabian Ware was remembered yesterday when the plaque was unveiled during morning worship at Holy Trinity, Amberley.
Founder of the Imperial – now Commonwealth – War Graves Commission, Sir Fabian died in 1949 aged 80 and was buried in Amberley churchyard.

It's going mad out there. Since the WW1 engine was back on line mid afternoon today, there have been 506 searches. The street lights around here are turning brown.
