Yesterday in a rare book shop I came across With the Allied Armies in Italy by Edward Seago. Didn't buy it (yet) partly because I wasn't aware of this man before. Apparently he was very popular in the postwar era? A couple of little bits of information about him that I could find through google: - worked on camouflage techniques for Auchinleck and had a lifelong friendship with him (!) - designed the airborne logo of Bellerophon on Pegasus! - had heart trouble and had to give up his commission, though I'm unclear on the date. He may have stayed in Italy after that? "Alexander was an admirer and friend of the artist Edward Seago, as indeed was Field Marshal Auchinleck. Alexander personally enlisted Seago as an unofficial war artist on his Italian campaign, since the artist could not enlist because of a heart condition. Seago’s book, With the Allied Armies in Italy, reproduced his work during this campaign" Painting à deux: Churchill's and Alexander's Portraits of Lake Como," 1945 This page here shows a bronze of Bellerophon on Pegasus. It seems like it may have been a model for the logo. Edward Seago and Pegasus - The ABfaR Blog I might have to go back and get the book...
Look forward to seeing your review Chris. Might even buy the book, it's only 7 quid from Abe books and lots of interesting photographs of his work. Been googling Seago-seems to have been an interesting chap. I do like his watercolour paintings. I know it's only Wiki but.... a very interesting article: Edward Seago - Wikipedia Lesley
