My Grandfather was also in the East Surrey regiment during WWII he joined at Croydon and went to Richmond Park where they were under canvass. He then went up to the Scottish borders to complete training in Arctic Warfare.
So where did they get sent Algiers on Operation Torch.
After Tunis I am lead to believe the East Surrey's were in a bit of a state and what was left of them was used to sweep up the left overs of the enemy and land on the island of Pantellaria.
They went to Sicily, onto Italy abut it was during this time many were moved to other regiments within the 8th Army.
My Grandfather was co - opted into the 2nd North Staffs, and was on the Anzio Landings. He was in one of the front line areas and was captured when the Germans counter attacked at Buonriposo Ridge

Do you have your granddad's service records to untangle all the different threads of movement, which should highlight when he arrived in North Africa.

East Surreys were not involved in Pantellaria during June 1943 - 3rd Infantry Brigade (1st Div) landing there to accept the surrender of the 4500 odd Italian garrison.

2nd North Staffs were, of course. in 1st Div (2nd Brigade).
