The LIFE magazine picture hereunder may be one of photos your refer to.

Dunkirk - 2 RUR soldier getting some rest in his trench during rear guard duty at Dunirk.jpg

If the 2/RUR caption checks out, this would situate these trenches somewhere in the area between Furnes and Bulskamp. What strikes me though is the treeline behind the trench which to me suggest a canal. The trench, however, is oriented perpendicular to the treeline. This can only make sense if the canal is the Lo-canal, which would mean the trench is facing the Ypres-Furnes road (nowadays known as the N8 or Iepersesteenweg).

According to local hear-say, the Germans, overeager in trying to reach Furnes, took some casualties near the place called 'Draaibrug' which is located on that same N8. It stands to reason that this bloody nose may have been administered by the 2/RUR.

I shall put this hypothesis to the test and let you guys know if I come up with something interesting. I fear though it might be a wild goose chase The E40 motorway has since profoundly altered this area and works are currently in progress in that same vicinity in order to widen the N8. Some old constructions were recently demolished in the process...

    Kind Regards,
    Christian

The New Prince of Wales and Britannia in June 1940, Sailed together in the flotilla to take part in the Dunkirk evacuation beaches.
In the course of the evacuation, New Prince of Wales was sunk, with the loss of two of her crew. The Britannia survived.
Is there any info on the sinking of the New Prince of Wales.
Postcards from my collection of the boats pre war.

The New Prince of Wales was a Dunkirk loss - sunk off La Panne in 6ft of water, after drifting into the middle of an artillery duel between a German army shore-battery and a French destroyer.

Je pense à la fumée de l'incendie de la raffinerie de Saint-Pol-sur-mer à l'ouest du port de Dunkerque.
