Hi, Last night I was reading an account of a soldier who was evacuated from Dunkirk ,it made me lsmile. I then thought (maybe my imagination?) that there`s actually a photograph (or piece of footage?) out there which shows a smiling soldier arriving back in this country with an `alarm clock` tied around his neck? The paragraph I read was;- At 14;30 hrs the order was cancelled the situation was much improved around Dunkirk and new orders were received..The battalion were to be evacuated and they were to move back down the beaches for embarkation!.L/Cpl Wilson of the 8th DLI was the President of the Regimental Institute and administrator of the fund for the benefit of the battalion as he marched along it was noticed he wore an alarm clock around his neck and carried a sandbag full of small change in French currency which had been in the N.A.F.F.I at the start of the campaign and he had refused to give it up despite his ordeal...he eventually returned back to England where it was exchanged for £40 sterling and deposited back in the Regimental coffers! Anyone else remember the photograph or perhaps I was dreaming Thanks Kyle
I read that story but don't recall a photograph - Bert Hardy comes to mind as he photographed returning troops for Picture Post, but it's a long shot?
The nearest I can think to this is a soldier with a dartboard...Infact I'm pretty sure he's RAF. Who else would have time to play darts
Thanks for the replies perhaps it was my imagination....or was it I remember the dartboard photo I think he had some kind of rag doll on his belt too ? I'll search around a little more and post it if I find it ( if it exists ) Thanks Kyle
