Dated 2nd January 1940 - Gdsm Cole and Hall tried by FGCM Dated 9th January 1939 - Gdsm Cole and Hall sentenced to 12 months hard labour. I wonder what they did ?
I should be able to answer some these now - I've copied the BEF Courts Marshall Register. I noticed one chap was convicted of murder and was given the Death Penalty. Luckily for him it was commuted to 15 years penal servitude.
I've been reading the more recent of the published versions of Alanbrooke's diaries and the entry for 13th January 1940 includes this :- "...then went on to see the Prefect of Lille to express my deep regrets for the murder of a French woman by a man of the 4th Div. He was very nice about it." He was of course commanding 2nd Corps at the time. Have you seen anything that sheds any light on this ?
Going to look now...I only noticed one murder but there were a fair few manslaughter cases. 4 Div doesn't really narrow it down though does it? Just checked and I found another Murder in the BEF but not the death sentance one. There's far more Manslaughter's than I thought to.
