I was looking for information on tank transmissions today and came across this article from 1965 by Mr Butterfield, who at the time was Assistant Director (Tracked Vehicles) at FVRDE at Chertsey (Fighting Vehicles Research & Development Establishment) which is a pretty interesting overview of various systems and functions of tank components.

Just found out that T.L.H. Butterfield was in the Department of Tank Design's Welding Section during WW2, so he was an old stager by 1965.
