killed in action aged 28 on the 4th of March 1943 in Tunisia North Africa. Probably due to actions following these links for the battles in the hills of Tunisia (Not the Desert, there is no real desert in Tunisia): For a very good up to date view of the Hills watch this video although the actions are in April 1943. There are a number of threads regarding Beja on the forum just scroll down the recent postings, see Sidi Nsir Also 155 Field Battery, Royal Artillery, there is an account by the Royal Hampshire's: The Battle of Sidi Nsir, Tunisia - The Royal Hampshire Regiment Museum There was much fighting to follow. So much to be searched online. Sidi Nsir - 155th Battery/172 Field Regiment RA There is a book "The Plain Cook and the Great Showman" by Gregory Blaxland which I bought s/h online at a very reasonable price. It covers the battles that followed in detail and the whole campaign. Including 4th March at Tamera 6 miles west of Sedjenane 67 Km north of Beja towards the coast. This was the 1st not the 8h Army in the hills and mountains of Tunisia. The 8th were motorised desert fighters moving at speed. These battlefields had to be climbed. Enjoy the journeys. You now need his Regiments War Diary entry for 4th March 1943 co confirm what happened that day if it is entered there but being an O/R his name is unlikely to be mentioned. As you are not related, I doubt that a Service Record would tell you more than you have already.
This just turned up on a thread take look at the dates Saw it earlier but didnt look close enough. Operation Ochsenkopf - Wikipedia Thanks to Davidbfpo
Thanks for the great pointers. I will look these up . I had a look on newspapers online. Just the usual casualty report. thanks again for taking the time to reply. M
Just following these 155/SidiNsir threads while I try to understand how these posts link. Stan Green was the BSM of E Troop at Sidi Nsir. Any anecdotes / mentions in any diarirs welcomed. See 155 dinner 1942 photo /191853 - for many of those training for action there. I have been trying to link those named to CWGC/PoW records. So for I find [of those named] 5 in CWGC records : PoWs - 12 of E & 19 of F Troop posibilities. Where are the names of those lost on the sinking the Jean Janot listed ? There is a Gnr Standing shown in F Troop photo - Is that Charlie of the Film title? Was he actually Hampshire Regt. or 155th Field RA attached ?
Green-genes, Welcome aboard. As this thread is titled for a RAMC casualty it may be useful to copy your post above to the 155 / SidiNsir threads, where those interested are more likely t spot it (adding you posted it here).
Green-genes, The forum's search facility has limitations, so if you search with "sidi nsir" + "ww2talk.com" on Google, or another search engine, you will discover there are several threads here which may have the answer. An earlier post here shows: Sidi Nsir - 155th Battery/172 Field Regiment RA That thread shows a Tag on the top line, following that you will see two other tagged threads on Sidi Nisir; you can only add a tag when composing the first post, hence using a search engine to establish if there are more. A PM too in a moment on research.
I find this very interesting. My grandfather served in the RAMC (167 Field Ambulance). Although he was in the Tunisian desert, he wouldn’t have been there in March ‘43. My records suggest that he would have still been in Egypt. Nonetheless, what does interest me is that WJ Giles and my grandfather both hailed from Freuchie in Fife, Scotland. Fruechie is little more than a hamlet village (today boasting a population of around 800 at best). The families must have known each other. If you find out more please PM me. I’ll do the same in kind. PS: My grandads records are also posted on this same topic ‘Thomas C Wilson, RAMC’
Thistle746's thread in his P.S. is: 7375489 Thomas Cunningham WILSON, Royal Army Medical Corps: Service records help needed Nemesis was last logged on here on Sunday last, I will send him a PM to take a look at this thread.
