Visited the very grand Keddleston Hall last weekend home of the very grand Curzon family. One grave in their own private church intrigued me . Private R.Curzon Derbyshire Yeomanry killed on active service 10th July 1940. The date and the rank seemed unusual , anyone know anything more ?

Might be coincidence, but checked for same day casualties ... if linked then this is a possible training accident.

Ah that sounds like him , Captain sounds more likely for such a grand family , maybe I misread the faded gravestone , -CPT probably. wonder where he was on 10th July 1940.

R H Jelf's inscription reads killed on active service in a flying accident. Maybe they were together when they died.

    Cheers

Craig, it's still not been established that they were together, though it'd be a pretty big coincidence all the same.

Might be a good idea to see if RAF chaps have any info on crashes that took place that day with 'passengers' ... there were 32 RAF deaths that day, some of whom were also buried in UK. I haven't weeded out any - ie with cemeteries abroad.

I first reported this a couple of years ago which was acknowledged by CWGC and I have chased on a few occasions.
It is now in a worse state.

Indeed...I'm not sure CWGC will be interested though as it's not one of their graves. Didn't families have the choice of a standard CWGC headstone with the promise of looking after it 'forever' or you have your own family one at your own expense and CWGC would have nothing to do with it?

    Hello Andy
I have reported many broken/worn private headstones in the UK and CWGC do attend to assess and repair where they can.If they can not repair a private headstone they replace with a CWGC headstone.
Unfortunately their teams are small and it can take a number of months or years to get resolved.
Example below of private to CWGC headstone.
