58 MU RAF had a recycling area on what is now Yorke Drive, which was next to the town dump (complaints of rats the size of cats there). There was a 58 MU hangar next to Castle railway station to run larger parts direct to the manufactures for repair or recycling. Brownhill's was the RASC/REME camp. A Large fuel store was between the RASC camp and RAF Winthorpe. The house still on what is now the traffic island between A1/A46/A17 was the officers mess.

Fantastic detail, thanks. So Arnold actually told me REME, me thinking RE was same. He did say it was where Brownhills is. He was involved in the recycling, but as an ex Luftwaffe Pilot, I suspect not until the war was actually finished. I got this photo off the wall at Newark Air Museum - crashed Lancaster on Queen Mary's entering Winthorpe

Have you any more detail on the other Newark Camps used for POWs, esp Caunton and Little Carlton, please?

Nothing more than the late Trevor Frecknall added on Our Nottinghamshire on your comment. I'm in Newark, I'll ask about, re Caunton and Little Carlton. With regards the Wigsley/Spalford POW's my dad can remember one incident clearly. While at Besthorpe school some German POW's joined the children in a game of football. The teacher an ex guardsman came over and told the POW's to clear off in no uncertain terms. One POW said something in German that the teacher must have understood as he laid him out with one punch.

What a mix of units and nationalities.
I wonder if their relatives know about their fate.
    Stefan.

Some don't show up on the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge, take it these may have not been German. Strangely some don't show up on the Government Records Office either.

This is a much longer list than I would have expected, given that deaths in UK camps were supposedly much fewer in number and as a ratio of deaths to POWs than in other countries. I think the numbers are in Faulk's book, Group Captives somewhere. If you have the dates and some are loosely grouped, they may have been an outbreak of meningitis. There were very few shooting casualties by trigger happy guards, but quite a few classed as suicides in 1944 and the first months of 1945 could have been murders by diehards of anti Nazis. It took a while for the Brits to cotton on.

    Hi

Bischa, Willer and Moritz were road traffic accidents.
Blaha, Vehlow and Spiess were suicide.
Ratsch was crushed in a railway siding.
Sturner, Stumpel and Hanisch heart failure.

Would be grateful if anyone knew what happened to the others,

    Regards,

    Graeme

    Hi

Many thanks for the above certificates, appreciate it.

    DANNENBERG
Pionier D863414 Kurt Dannenberg served in the German Army.
Whilst working on the extensions to North Wilford Power Station on the banks of the River Trent at Nottingham, Dannenberg and others went for a swim in the river on Friday 12 July 1946. Within a few minutes he was seen to disappear from view.
His body was recovered from the river near Wilford toll bridge the following day by the Police.
Dannenberg was originally buried in Nottingham Southern Cemetery.

    Regards

    Graeme

    SPIESS
Gefreiter 642097 Werner Spiess was incarcerated in Camp 633, Boughton Camp, New Ollerton, Nottinghamshire and was accidentally killed on Sunday 28 October 1945.
He was the son of Otto Friedrich August and Emma Elise Speiss and served in the German Army.
An Inquest was held into Spiess’s death by the District Coroner, Mr. E.G. Warburton, sitting with a jury.
Private George William Christie told the court that, having been relieved from guard duties, he went to the latrines carrying his rifle in which there was one round. Spiess was just leaving and pushed Christie’s rifle aside causing it to slip from his hand. The witness caught it as it fell, but his finger touched the trigger and a shot was fired, killing Spiess.
The jury returned a verdict of ‘accidental death’.
Spiess was originally buried in East Retford Cemetery, Nottingham in Grave AK.138.

    Regards,

    Graeme

    interesting
I wonder would they have carried out a site visit investigation or did they take the case at face value in the coroners court and the jury decided based on the information given.

ZUZUNASWILLI, MAIS Pionier, I have seen listed as Ukrainian, although someone with an understanding of Russian says the spelling as Маис Жужунашвилли is more Georgian. Either way, I can not find a death cert at GRO. But looking at the date, I would surmise he also died at 184 General Hospital Sutton-in-Ashfield. Ost-Battalion in Normandy ? He doesn't show up on the VDK database either.
