Dambusters: Where were their final resting places?

Please see the edited version of where we are up to with this project - Hope you can assist!

    http://ww2talk.com/forums/topic/47907-dambuster-raid-survivors-of-ww2-dates-of-death-and-burial-details/?p=564004

I thought this might be an interesting exercise for all, not just for me with the Australian involvement. The majority of course were British with other crew from Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the USA. (any others?)

Many died on the raid, many died not long after in 1943 and prior to the end of the war and some were POW. Many survived, do we know where they are buried? Can we gather photos of all their Headstones and Memorials to make a definitive album? Are there any who are still alive?

Does anyone have a total list to post of those who participated so we can check them off one by one over the months/years?? ahead. (I know there are websites which list them all however I do not have it on a spreadsheet to post.

There maybe some that you know of who survived the war and what they reverted to or did post war.

I hope this will become a very interesting thread.

My first is a "post war" burial and is listed on the next post!

1st edit: We should possibly include the others involved - Sir Arthur Harris and Barnes Wallis.

2nd edit: Addition of each crew in the three waves. Will be marked in red when Headstone & Personal Photo achieved.

Micky Martin (Harold Brownlow Morgan Martin KCB, DSO & Bar - DFC & Two Bars, AFC) and his crew also made a perfect hit on the Mohne Dam but failed to breach it. Micky Martin had a distinguished career during the war and in later life. Died age 70 on 3rd November 1988. Buried at Gunnersbury Cemetery in the western area of Chiswick in the borough of Hounslow. (Anybody live near for a photo?)

    Thanks for that Drew.

The following is from ATB's "The Dams raid Through The Lens". BY Helmut Euler.

The survivors from the raid can be identified.

I would ask that folks indulge me placing a photo of "Niggers" grave , I don't in any way intend this to be disrespectful being a dog owner I just feel he too was a part of the event in historical terms.

Sad that the poor animals grave has now to be protected from potential thieves.

    Thanks James,
    Great photos and info.

There is a website which has the names listed like yours yet it has the nationality shown as well and if they survived the war.

    Hi Chris,

That name does not show up on any of my lists?

He was possibly with 617sq but not on the actual raid. It seems to read as he was.

I believe there are five veterans from the raid still alive:

Ray Grayston - Lives in the UK
George (Johnny) Johnson - Lives in the UK
Les Munro - Lives in New Zealand
Grant McDonald - Lives in Canada
Fred Sutherland - Lives in Canada

    However, I stand corrected!

I think there was a Dambuster veterans funeral in my home town some time in the 90's. It may have been P/O Townsend, I'll have to investigate.

Will do Geoff, What's the easiest way of posting 54 photos?

I'm missing a few that are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial, Maybe Peter could fill in those, as I believe he lives in that vicinity?

    Did I miscount?

Maybe Von Poop or another MOD may give you the preferred action. Some load 10 at a time however I have never tried it.

    Mod's??
