Good day to everyone and good mood! Dear like-minded people, I decided to create a topic and I hope that it will be interesting. I invite everyone to take part in the study, identifying the images of occupied Europe. I love riddles and the process of solving them.I hope you are too.
So, a German soldier took a photo,he did not make an inscription on it.Thus, he created a kind of riddle for us, collectors and researchers.Where was the photo taken, in what place, in what period? This is where our task begins to solve the mystery of photography.
You see, it’s interesting to learn more about photography, so to speak, to look beyond its scope, besides, it also broadens one's horizons. This is our task, otherwise the photo will remain impersonal and not very interesting.
Let's all together try to solve these riddles, as well as virtually travel through the countries of the once occupied Europe.
I want to warn you that there will be many riddles and the topic promises to be interesting.
So, let's begin. The first photo:What is the cathedral in the photo,in which city?

Are you looking for genuine help with your photos because, in the case of this photo you don't know the cathedral city name (this could mean many of us spending a lot of time helping you), or do you already know the answer (a quiz)? If you already know the answer then why not just tell us and then ask if any of us can help with any more (genuine, non quiz) question you may have?

    A good point.
I spent sometime this morning looking into it but then gave up .
I did think the OP might already know.

I like the buses too. I'm going to guess they are French?

Friends, this is not a quiz.I could not even imagine that you would have such thoughts.I really need your help and I will try to help if you post your photo.
I continue to search for an answer to the photo that interests me, and if I find it, I will immediately inform you about it.

Maybe thread title should read "please help ID this church".

No, the topic has the correct title. In my collection there are a lot of photos whose location I do not know, so I count on real help in identifying them.
As soon as we identify the exposed photo, we continue to move.

It may be best to post all the photos at once rather than drip feeding one at a time (as is my understanding of your post) as it may be photos are linked so one helps answer another and so on.

The uniforms look German, is that a VW peeping round the corner? Perhaps its the side of Cologne Cathedral before it was bombed. Could even be Austria.
Problem is that it really needs to be shown on a site related to the country of origin as most servicemen were too busy doing other things than look at the scenery.

Having said that some serviceman brought a few snaps home without writing the place names on them.
Any ideas on these two? Dont think its Italy like the rest of the photos in the family box.

Could get quite confusing with numbers of photos if you get out of sync.
Cant think I've been to Metz, perhaps driven through.

All looks rather Greek (or something) to me! Where is it are you sure its the same place?
Right hand picture: Is it Russia. One of the men was a POW at Auschwitz he was liberated by the Russians would he have gone home via Russia though? Perhaps someone gave him a picture of Moscow as a souvenir
I thought the left hand picture might have been Berlin.
The photo directly above looks a bit like Istanbul from an odd angle. but the houses look Germanic

I've had a look but its difficult to make out the detail - they are a bit harder to pick out defining features

Unfortunately this was the case with photos that soldiers brought home. They tended to be contact prints as enlargers, paper and film were in short supply, unless there was an RAF base nearby .
I will try to enhance them and try again.

No captions no Idea who took them or where. Found in a box of family memorabilia.
All other photos were of Tunisia or Italy but one of the men was a Pow liberated by the Russians.
Might have come from a relative or friend.
For some reason I thought it might be Dresden I might have seen some photos of it elsewhere.
Another POW was in Leipzig and might have collected a photo post war.
