Attending the commemoration of Montevideo Maru Updated June 22, 2010 09:04:24 Australia has finally acknowledged its worst maritime disaster during World War Two when a Japanese prisoner-of-war ship carrying more than a thousand Australian servicemen and civilians from Papua New Guinea was sunk off the Philippines. The tragedy was commemorated in Canberra yesterday. The minister of Veterans' Affairs and Defence Personnel Alan Griffin made a statement about the sinking of the Montevideo Maru, with a reply from the opposition recognising the tragedy.
