Could someone confirm that this colour photo is JUNO beach. As I am now looking at the British during D-Day and the Battle of Caen. I got the photo from Wikipedia, but anyone can post on Wikipedia and change the facts. Thanks, Ben
Yes it is Juno. Most coloured photos of British beaches are on Juno. It also shows the red band round the LCTs bridge. Each beach had a different colour. Mike.
Hi Mike Thanks for confirming it. I was looking at one of the soldiers patches on his shoulder but I couldn't find a mind a match as the patch is to far away from the camera to pick out anything. Thanks Ben
I also have a few more colour photos of the Commonwealth on a beach. I presume they are of Juno beach beacuse of the red banded LCT's.
Could I ask what the coloured bands were for Gold and Sword. As I am researching them aswell. Thanks Ben
Yes. The other photos are of Juno as well. There is a series of coloured photos taken by the same photographer. Best source for these is the National Archives of Canada. I never learnt how to put links in posts. Your first picture is a very useful one since it shows several aspects of the landing, stranded LCA, beach trackway made of chespales, cleared beach obstacles etc. Everything looks very calm and peaceful but the assault was different. Mike
Trux, Yeah I could imagine the main assualt was different to when the reinforcements arrived with all the obstacles cleared, no MG's firing at them. I found a few more colour photos of Juno. One is of the same view but with more soldiers in the line. The one outside the Queens own Rifles house is interesting. It shows Canadian MP's searching German prisoners. Thanks, Ben
Not any expertise here but I thought the 3rd Candian Infanrty division sported their new turtle shell helmets on D-day to me it appears that these are the standard Brodie. any thoughts or info on this? Great pics BTW Thanks Matt
Matt. The new style helmet was issued to the assault units on all three beaches. Other troops kept the older model. Also not all troops landing on Juno were Canadian. Mike
More likely a British MP from one of the Beach Groups, as there are men by him with white bands on helmets - that denotes a member of a Beach Group.
sliben, I believe the beach photos were taken by Lieut. Ken Bell of the Canadian Film and Photo Unit (CFPU). There's a short article on him by his nephew Alex on the following page. The link after leads to same photos with explanations of the landing craft involved. http://flipanimation.blogspot.ca/2013/08/the-photography-of-ken-bell.html http://www.stolly.org.uk/ETO/index34.html Regards ...
I'm sure that one is reversed cos the church tower is wrong side of the house. Here's a pic I took in October 2010
Hi, Another photo showing the MP. Insignia shows that he is part of a Beach Group as Owen said. For some reason a few websites have reversed some of the colour photos of the landing craft. Regards Danny
Owen, I agree with you I to believe the photo has been turned around, but if you look to the right there is a little house. In the picture below you can see the house again and its also on the right of the Queens own Rifles house. The house is circled in red.
Ken Bell revisited the sites of his wartime photos and shot them again. They were published in his 1973 book, Not in Vain. A few can be seen at the following site: http://huckleberryhax.blogspot.ca/2014/06/remembering-d-day.html Regards ...
