27377 Captain Patrick Desmond COOK, 2 TRANSVAAL SCOTTISH.

6 Infantry Brigade, 2 South African Division
On the surrender of TOBRUK, Capt. COOK called an Order Group of his Pl. Comdrs. and told them that all men under his command who wished to make an attempt to escape should be given all the water and rations they could carry and come with him that night. Every man of his Coy. was prepared to make the attempt.

After seeing his Pls on their way, Capt. COOK moved off with his Coy., H.Q. at 08.30 on foot. All stores and equipment which could not be taken with him were destroyed before leaving. Capt. COOK and his party made their way up the escarpment past FIG TREE 40084336 and on looking back saw that TOBRUK was hidden under a pall of black smoke from burning dumps and vehicles.

At 0930 Capt. COOK met Major ST. HILL of the COLDSTREAM GUARDS [edit: SAINTHILL of 3Bn COLDSTREAM GUARDS] who told him that he was about to attempt a break through and that he, Capt. COOK, could join them with his party if he wished. Capt. COOK thereupon split up his party placing one man on each of the GUARDS' trucks. They moved off and on reaching the proximity of GAP 3972429 came under enemy M.G. and Arty fire. They ran the gauntlet successfully sustaining only a small number of casualties and made of the EL ADEM Escarpment.

A party of Italians in four trucks attempted to head them off but the GUARDS' trucks made straight for them and they beat a retreat. Four of the enemy actually tried to join he GUARDS' party. The escaping party then sighted enemy vehicles at the top of the escarpment and heading due WEST towards KNIGHTSBRIDGE outsdistanced the enemy. They then turned SOUTH and made their way over the escarpment and after running 40 miles due SOUTH turned EAST below EL GUBI.

At this point the vehicle Capt. COOK was travelling in broke down owing to radiator trouble. Water bottles and all spare water were emptied in the radiator the party managed to reach the wire 20 miles SOUTH of SHERFERZEN where the 9 MOTOR BDE repaired the vehicle and supplied water.

The party finally reached EL DABA on Thursday (25 June '42) joined the COLDSTREAM GUARDS and handed over the vehicle.

Only one officer and 24 O.R.s of Capt. COOK's company escaped. The remainder were probably captured on the way.

The action of Capt. COOK in organising his Company to attempt a break-out after the fall of the Fortress was most laudable, especially as he had no transport available and his subsequent joining up with the COLDSTREAM GUARDS detachment was entirely fortuitous: he was not only prepared to fight his way out, but also intended to march his Company back to the British lines. He brought out the largest organised body of S.A. troops that eventually reached our lines and the moral effect of his action has had important repercussions, not only in the U.D.F. but also in South Africa.

30924 Major Hereward Maryon SAINTHILL, 3 Bn COLDSTREAM GUARDS

At 1600 hours on June 20 at TOBRUK, after the enemy had penetrated the defences, Major SAINTHILL was the senior officer of the 3 CG at Bn HQ, his C.O. having gone earlier to BDE HQ with whom communication was cut about this time.

Two Coys had already been overrun and so Major SAINTHILL decided to withdraw the remainder of the Battalion to the area of Fort PILASTRINO to link up with 1/WORCESTERSHIRE REGT there. This movement was accomplished successfully and a defensive position established during the night in conjunction with O.C. 1/WORC REGT and a SA Fd Arty Regt.

At 0645 hours June 21, Major SAINTHILL was informed by a Troop Comd of the SA Arty that he had orders to destroy everything, equipment and vehicles. Major SAINTHILL queried this order with O.C. 1/WORCESTERSHIRE REGT who went to see Lt.-Col. WHITE, SA Arty, who confirmed it.

Major SAINTHILL immediately decided to assemble the battalion in the transport area and attempt to break out. He detailed six 3-tonners to go back to pick up men of the WORCESTERSHIRE REGT.

Petrol was equally distributed and at 0830 hours led by an officer of the 67th MEDIUM REGT, the Column proceeded and made an exit at point S4.

The bulk of the battalion with some South Africans passed through the gap, encountering heavy small arms automatic fire for approximately two miles.

At 2000 hours the column reached the frontier wire. It totalled 387 ranks, of which 16 officers and 183 were 3 COLDSTREAM GUARDS. The Battalion brought out, too, six A/TK guns.

I consider that the initiative shewn by Major SAINTHILL was outstanding at a most critical time and that his prompt and courageous decision enabled nearly four hundred persons to avoid capture by the enemy.

    SIDI BRAHIM, 26 Apr 43
This L/Cpl, one of the Coy signallers, showed the greatest coolness and fearlessness in bandaging and helping to evacuate wounded under heavy M.G. and shell fire.

After carrying one man away he returned to Coy H.Q. to collect a Bren Gun although most of the Coy had withdrawn. He remained there, still under heavy fire, till ordered to withdraw by an officer.

His courage and efforts were the greatest inspiration to all those around him. Throughout the campaign the conduct of this L/Cpl in every action has been of the very highest order.
