    Thank you once again Clive.

Oh dear, you are right about the state of that grave and headstone. Looks like another case of family plot which has since fallen into disrepair. Such a shame about the wording. Was it one of those types with metal letters placed into the stone, and now they have fallen out?

Am I to undestand that as a family grave the CWGC do not have any involvement in maintaining the grave:unsure: could they not become involved if all the family have passed.

I believe the family are asked if they wish to have a CWGC maintained grave. If they refuse, then it is up to the family yes. I suppose there'd be no harm in informing the Commission just to make them aware. Sadly, family pass on or move on.

yes it was the stone type where metal letters were placed in the stone. The whole cemetery was quite run down. The Alperton cemetery was very well maintained though.

    1st Guards Brigade, 78th Division, 5th Corps

During the fighting on LONG STOP HILL on 24/25 Dec 42 this Gdsm was a Coy stretcher bearer.

Throughout the action he displayed great courage and devotion to duty, tending wounded men under fire and remaining consistently where the fighting was at the highest pitch.

He remained totally indifferent to any personal danger and was responsible for saving several lives.

2636190 Lance-Sergeant Richard SUMNER, 2 Bn Coldstream Guards

    1st Guards Brigade, 78th Division, 5th Corps

This NCO commanded a section during the night attack on LONG STOP HILL on 22/23 Dec 42, when his Pl came under very heavy M.G. fire.

L/Sgt Sumner with 2 men located and attacked this M.G. post which they captured; he then brought the captured gun back into action against the enemy, and continued to fire the gun until all the enemy amn was finished.

This action permitted the Coy to continue their attack which would otherwise have been held up.

2644058 Sergeant Geoffrey SHARPLES, 2nd Bn Coldstream Guards

    1st Guards Brigade, 78th Division, 5th Corps

During an attack on LONG STOP HILL on the night of 24/25 Dec 42 this Sgt displayed the highest qualities of courage and devotion to duty.

His Coy found themselves pinned on a hill top completely dominated by German mortards and M.G. fire. The Coy Comd and Sgt Major had both been wounded and this NCO took over the duties of Sgt Major.

Throughout the night, which was bright moonlight, he was tireless in carrying amn to the forward posts under enemy observation, mortar and M.G. fire.

His personal example was of the greatest encouragement and inspiration to the whole Coy, and he appeared utterly unconscious of his own safety throughout the whole action. He was subsequently severely wounded.

113733 Lieutenant Robert Erskine PHILIPS, 2 Bn Coldstream Guards

    Guards Brigade, 78th Division

This officer was the Bn Mortar Officer when, on the evening of 24 Dec 42, it waas ordered to attack the German defences on LONG STOP HILL. During the attack, Lt. PHILIPS showed the greatest initiative in getting his 3" mortars into action and was at all times well forward with the leading Coys.

That night owing to casualties it was necessary to order Lt. PHILIPS to take over command of No. 3 Coy, then occupying the most advanced position constantly under enemy mortar and M.G. fire. This officer assumed his new responsibilities with vigor and efficiency, and continued to organise the consolidation of the Coy without any thought to his own safety until, towards dawn on 25 Dec, a Captain arrived from the 1st Reinforcements who took over the Coy.

Lt. PHILIPS then resumed command of his mortars just before the German counter-attack at dawn. During this action, and although by now suffering from strain and fatigue, he controlled his Pl with great vigor, and when the Bn position had been almost entirely over-run he gave no thought to giving up the struggle, but at once endeavoured to place himself under comd of the Bn coming up in support so that he could better assist to stem the German advance.

Throughout the whole action this officer displayed the highest qualities of leadership and was an inspiration of all who came in contact with him.

    Recommmended for Immediate award

P/1865B Lieutenant-Colonel William Sutton Stewart BROWN, 2nd Bn Coldstream Guards

    1st Guards Brigade, 78 Division, ? Corps

Lt.-Col. Stewart BROWN was in command of his Bn during operations against DJ EL AH?ERA from 22 Dec. to 25 Dec., 42. These operations comprised a night attack, a withdrawal on relief of an American Bn, to a concentration area for operations elsewhere, and, finally, a further advance and attack on DJ EL AH?ERA. When the situation there became critical.

Throughout this period he displayed the highest qualities of leadership and great personal courage: all his Officers and men are insistent that his conduct was an inspiration to them.

Prior to the second attack he carried out a personal reconnaissance over ground in possession of the enemy.

Finally, when a heavy counter-attack retook the ridge he remained there to the last and was wounded.
