More information re organisation of Army Transport Coy RASC in May 44 can be found in the attached Loading Instructions for 701 Coy. Regards Tom
More information from WDs re 6-ton platoons in Army Tpt Coys: 1 Army Transport Coy RASC WD records that in mid-Sept an additional platoon of 6-tonners was formed: 12 September 1944 RUGLES Platoon formed out of R.D.I. personnel proceeded under command of LT MOTLEY to Army Vehicle Park to collect 33 x 6-ton vehicles. The 701 Army Transport Coy RASC WD is not so explicit, however, after previously being limited to only one 6-ton platoon, by 28 Sep the WD records details being assigned to 40 6-ton vehicles (with a max of 56 being mentioned in Oct), and there is later mention of a 'Y' Platoon which I assume must be a second 6-ton platoon. This may not be thre right place but I am trying to trace RASC coys and see more in this thread than anywhere else. I know I need war diaries but does anyone know of a list\record of which RASC coys served where and with which units\corps etc. Initially my interest is with 13RMT coy 1940, 1941; 404GT coy 1943 and 36 GT coy 1944 - 1946. Also as a driver used by the 5 Light Field Ambulance 1942, 1943 what type of ambulance he may have been using. Sorry to be a pest Brian
Brian, For 36 Coy RASC you need to look at WO171/2361 (March - Dec 44); which indicates that the company served in NW Europe at some point after D-day. Regards Tom
Further to the discussion about the number of 3-ton platoons, it seems that the intention to equip two platoons with heavier vehicles began to be realised in Dec 44, see the following entries for 701 Coy RASC (Army Tpt): 8 December 1944 33 x 3 ton vehs were handed over to 645 Coy RASC (Comp) at GHEEL. 9 December 1944 āDā Platoon became equipped with 5 ton Macks hitherto held by āYā Platoon.
