Changes & general tidying up.

We are even thinking of ditching the post count all together.

Not that I'm interested in post counts (see post above), and I am aware of a minority of forums where this figure isn't even made public and I don't see anyone losing by it.

Post counts and pretty reputation squares do have some usefulness in giving newcomers a first glance idea of the quality of the poster, if I may say so. Even this does not carry much weight for of course we have low post count members who do have contributions of the highest order, say Opanapointer for an example.

A newcomer after a while will start knowing who is who, but it would be interesting to know when one starts a thread that you're having heavyweights replying.

Being this forum what it is and the general quality membership this is a matter that doesn't bother me much either way.

By the way, a common and interesting trait I see in other forums is newcomers greeting each other on the introduction section. It's funny, they came in yesterday, made two posts and then fill in with twenty more welcoming other rookies as green as them :D

That's because I speak Upper Classes Pidgin.

I'm not worried about that detail, I have other concerns than pi$$ing contests :)

Just be carefull where you leave your car parked at night :D

I'm not interested in those sort of contests either.

By the way. That car is better than mine, even with the pick axes sticking out of it.

It doesn't really bother me one way or the other on post count or reputation.
I do like to see the join date, it nice to see those that have stuck around.

Added a 'British Indian Army' sub-forum to the Unit history bit.
Do feel free to fill it up, I'm not sure we touch on them them quite enough.
(More than a bit of self interest in the decision. Few things I like more than pics of Armoured cars & Pith helmets on the North West Frontier, nudge nudge.)

Just a note that we're currently mucking about with the forum headings and trying to improve clarity slightly there.
Don't be alarmed if a favourite thread disappears or doesn't show on the portal, nothing's being deleted, just moved. (I hope!)

    Too late!
All done for the moment- just tidying some front page links now.

Along with the usual request for people to point out if anything's gone screwy after forum-adjusting, I should perhaps point out what's been done.

'Anniversaries' moved to 'Main WW2Talk Forum' area rather than lurking on it's own looking untidy.
'Veteran accounts' And 'real life experiences' have been merged, and also brought into that main area. Stopping there being two sections essentially attracting the same sort of threads. (Might now need a clearer title for that area, something will occur).

Barracks is now at the bottom of the 'other stuff' list - not being sniffy about the barracks, just putting it in a more appropriate spot, and making a well used section easier to find on the forum lists.

Basically trying to condense the somewhat rambling forum lists, and attempting to merge confusing headings - there may be more changes, but for the moment I'll just be tweaking the odd forum description or two.

Closed 'Other Research' in the 'Research' area, and poured all the threads there into 'General'.

Just running some counter and thread info updates.
Should only take 10 minutes; but if anything slows down, that'll be me.

Highly relieved to be able to raise the site after being off-line since 6pm yesterday.

    Glad to be back !

I agree Ron, it has become almost addictive coming onto the forum. Hated the withdrawal today!

    Agreed.

I checked before going to bed last night and it was nice to see that I was connected again.

Thanks for all the hard work getting back on-line Adam.

Is it just me? or was there a 'brief' outage? :peepwalla:

1000 apologies chaps - running some routine maintenance hit a glitch in a somewhat large database, which caused the forum to fall over.

Our man in Chicago was on the case immediately (thank you Otto), but a corrupted file or two meant it was a slow old process.

All seems OK now, and doubtless Andy will be relieved that the 1940 section has been saved for the nation.
If you see anything strange going on post-recovery, do give us a shout.

    Carry on!

Nice to see you're back, with ww2f quarantined as well I was beginning to show withdrawal symptoms :).
