This is from the details from Kew but I was never able to find out why he was mentioned in dispatches.

  2. I'm not currently on Ancestry and was working from paperwork I didn't realise I had info on ancestry and didn't twig on to the date and age difference. Thanks for this.

An MID or MiD is often awarded for someone who has done their duty and a 'good' job over a period of time, most other medals for 'valour, are awarded for one particular action or event

I presume the document re the awards is from ADM 1/30326
There may be papers within that document giving more information as to why they were Mentioned. However, those awards were gazetted in a generic and non specific way i.e. For gallantry and outstanding devotion to duty whilst serving in. H.M. Ships Savage,Allington Castle, Orwell, Lapwing and Honeysuckle in escorting convoys to and from North Russia and in my experience very difficult or impossible now to find. The only other option would be to check local newspapers of the time and also Seedies List of Awards to the Royal Navy. But again, the content could be generic as above.

  8. I realised that. I got the names of the other ships i thought he served on from a Belfast paper but realised my mistake when I was shown the MID from the London Gazette.

if you write to the Mod Medal office, it’s free, they will confirm all your fathers medals and issue the newly authorised Arctic Star

as he was MiD for Russian Convoys then they will automatically issue without you having to prove entitlement

google claiming ww2 medals it’s on the .gov site

you can email the forms to them with a copy of your fathers death certificate

    hope this helps

There are many books on the Arctic Convoys but this one, which I'm afraid I haven't read, may give you an idea of the conditions. Written from a personal experience view rather than historical. It has good reviews.

I just ordered it from eBay it was £10.99. I am really interested to find out more about the conditions and I think this book will help.

    Thanks

There are lots of good books and TV/u-tube videos out there about the Arctic Convoys. This from two years ago at the assembly point for the convoys at Loch Ewe.
U.K. Veterans Reunited With The Arctic Convoys That Helped Win WWII

The road to Russia was a hard road indeed - Winston Churchill called it the worst journey in the world. Those who took part in it were very brave men indeed. Respect!
