I realize that this request is going to be WAY off topic, but I thought I would put it out there to see if I can get any help First, I'm Temujin, some of you may know me from the Canada at War website, where I help anyone who is searching for military information on the relatives (or anyone) My request. I'm doing research on Captain William Patton, 12th Royal Lancer's His DOB is 7 Jan 1796 DOD is Aug 1844 He is buried in Fossoway Church, Kinross, Scotland. I've been trying to obtain a "headstone" picture, but the local minister told us that the church yard is old, overgrown, and the headstone is buried in there "somewhere"......and she didn't want to have to cut her way in with a machette. I would really appreciate any assistance with this that any of the membership could give in obtaining a photo. Again, way off topic, but know how these websites try there best to help everyone, thought I would give it a try to see if someone could help Thank you in advance
Hi Temujin, From a quick search I have found a Captain William Patton - born 1796 and died Aug 1844, but his place of death and therefore perhaps burial is shown as Devon Shaw, Lanarkshire - on closer analysis this I believe to be near Lamington, Lanarkshire, Scotland. His parents were probably Father : James Patton (1765 - 1831) Mother : Ann Marshall (1764 - 1857) It might be worth contacting member amberdog45 as she lives in Scotland and may have access to more pertinent records. TD
Hi Temujin, I have, I think found some more on your man: Captain William Paton 12th Lancers Birth 7 Jan 1796 in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland Death Aug 1844 in Devonshaw I believe this is him in the 1841 census and it may also explain the Devonshaw connection ie, it could be the house name where he lived in Kinross. 1841 Scotland Census about Willm Patton Name: Willm Patton Age: 45 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1796 Gender: Male Where born: Kinross, Scotland Civil Parish: Fossoway County: Kinross Address: House Of Devonshaw Occupation: Independent Parish Number: 461 Household Members: Name Age Willm Patton 45 Wm Patton 30 J C Patton 15 E M Patton 10 C C Patton 10 M An Patton 5 Wm A Patton 5 Jas M Patton 5 Henry Patton 4 Margt A Patton 3 J Drummond 20 R Beveridge 20 J Lindsay 15 Can you explain the nature of you research into this person? TD
It may be that he married a Caroline Wilkinson in 1823 - Dublin, Ireland - but would assume she died just before the 1841 census as she does not appear on it. PM me if you wish TD
Thank you. I sure can. I'm researching for a family member. This is her Great Great Grandfather. She is 90 years "young" herself, and has been working on her family history for some years. Recently she learned (I'm a friend of the family) that I do research into the "military past" for people on the website I "work" on, Canada at War. So I have been researching various members of her family who served in the Canadian Military in WW1 and WW2. Captain William Patton, she has done a lot of work, and has a great deal of information, but she does not have his "headstone photo". Hence my search, on her behalf, for help getting this picture. She recalled a "painting" of Captain Patton, which hung in her family home in England when she lived theire. She has contacted the 12th Royal Lancer's and obtain a hugh amount of detail about him and his service from them. Captain Patton served under the Duke of Wellington in the Pennisula, and in fact I found a record of him "on staff" of the Duck, as a Lieutenant. The lady herself, is quite remarkable. She is a ham radio operator (even today), when she was young (lat 1930's) she obtained her "radio licence" and served about ships on the West Coast of Canada as a radio operator. During the war, she worked at Pont Grey, in Vancouver, in a non-descript looking building (she said it looked like a farm building) and she and the other ladies (civilians) listened to Japaness radio broadcasts (from submarines) in the Pacific, took down the code and the infor was all sent "somewhere" she said. At the end of the war, she says the ladies were told, THANK YOU very much ladies, but don't let he door hit you in the ass while your leaving..........Not much gratitude from the Canadian Government for years and years in a dark building listening to Japaness morse code all day I think Anyway, I have rambled........just wanted to give you a sense of the person that I'm "working for" on this project. Thanks again for your help.
Temujin, Hello and welcome to the Forum. I wish you well with your Research and hope that you can receive a grave photograph. Your Research sounds very interesting. Regards Tom
I'd get a copy of the regimental history if you want to know more about his time with the XII Lancers. The book starts with the regiments birth in 1715 and stops in 1948 so it will cover his service. http://www.abebooks.co.uk/servlet/SearchResults?an=Stewart&sts=t&tn=The+History+of+the+XII+Royal+Lancers
Seems I was wrong re Caroline : Caroline Wilkinson B: abt 1798 Spetisbury, Dorset, England D: 1859 York, Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom and his family seem to have spread far and wide: Isabella Caroline Paton Daughter born abt 1826 Ireland died 6 Jun 1899 Canada William Andrew Paton Son born 2 Nov 1831 Fossoway and Tulliebole, Scotland, United Kingdom died 14 Jun 1858 Point de Galle, Ceylon Caroline Charlotte Paton Daughter born abt 1831 Perth, Perthshire Elizabeth M Paton Daughter born abt 1831 England died Canada James Murray Paton Son born 19 Aug 1833 Fossoway and Tulliebole, Scotland, United Kingdom died 10 Jun 1907 Cottesloe, Western Australia, Australia, Henry William Paton Son born 16 Jun 1835 Fossoway and Tulliebole, Scotland, United Kingdom died 19 May 1855 Bénarès, Savanne, Mauritius Mary Ann Paton Daughter born 29 Oct 1835 Fossoway and Tulliebole, Scotland, United Kingdom died 14 Feb 1925 Sunnyside, Glenfarg, Perthshire TD

It also reveals he was the Regiments Medical Officer.
Thank you very much for the info. Of course any and all information is appreciated. I did not know he was the "medical officer". This may give me more avenues to search (medical) Thanks for all the help
Your correct. The info she has given me has family in Australia, NZ, here in Canada, England etc etc. So far I have been only researching the Canadian family (two from WW1) and have found there records. LAC in Canada has digitized their records and are on line now. Captain Patton I'm basically trying to get a headstone photo for her. And of course, any other infor on his military servicie. She has "tons" of family info, and I believe her family tree is quite complete on that side, but I'm filling in the blanks on the 'military side" for her. Thank you for your help, I appreciate it
Thank you Drew. I'll ask her if she has a copy, if not, I'll order one from the link you sent me. Thanks again for the help
Temujin It would appear that the Patton family have heeded Christ's instruction to His Apostles to- "Go forth and teach ye all nations " Chuck the machete and get someone in there to sort out all the headstones with a weed cutter… Cheers
TD, the wife was on the 1841 Census, just transcribed wrong by Ancestry. I also came across William's Will filed at Perth in Nov 44. His Will states he died 2nd June 1844. I thought it was going to be simple looking up his death entry now that I had his date of death, but can't find him in either the Parish records or any of the Catholic records. Hopefully the Church at Fossoway have a record of it, but I am beginning to wonder if your hunch was right about a burial on his own private land? His Will was 35 pages long, unfortunately doc is 3MB+ in size, but I've forwarded all that to Temujin to pass on to the lady. I think I will drop an email to the Bereavement Service at Perth Council to see if they may have record of his burial/headstone. They were a great help to me when I was researching my own kin from Perth. I also wonder if it's worth asking about the burial of Williams daughter that you found that passed away in 1925 in Perth. That also could lead us to family plot details perhaps. Tom, you would find lots of churchyards have fallen into a disgraceful state over here. Lots of churches are shut and being sold off for housing.
Hi amberdog I am not sure about his wife as there was only 2 years (give or take 1) between their birth dates, yet on the census's there is a 15 year gap between the 2 oldest ones ?? I will see if I can pull up anything on the daughter who died 1925 TD
Amberdog Didn't realize the current state of thing over there - regarding the Catholic records - they were banned until 1829 from Henry Viii ' days so by 1844 they would have been still missing in most places - we didn't get a High School in Dundee until 1936 - then it was a cast off from the protestant High school - who got a new one …. Cheers
