Firstly need to find his Army number to enable a proper search.
He appears in Herts Regt Museum Collection but little is known of him.
He apparently carried an American M1 30 semi automatic Carbine
Where did he get his ammunition from.
Where did he come from before he joined 1st Herts. part of British 1st Infantry Division from June 1944.

Does anyone recognise the other man in the photo?

    Thanks Tony,
    Seems to fit the bill.
Nothing to indicate any special forces connection.

Wondering why he was said to carry an American M1 30 apparently on display in the Herts Regiment Museum
and why they aren't aware of this newspaper cutting.
M1 Carbines seem to have only been issued to Paras or Special Forces.

I find it difficult to believe that only one officer would carry an American weapon in Italy..
He would need a personal supply of Ammunition and have it checked by the REME LAD Armourers for safety inspections.

Now I will go back to 80th Anniversary of 1st Division at Monte Grande thread and see if anything transpires
from the War Diaries of 1st Herts or the other units in 66 Infantry Brigade.

No indication so far of any British unis using American weapons.in 1st Infantry Division in Italy.

Maybe he had it as a post war personal souvenir.

In addition to the best man, see above, there were a number of other military types at the wedding:

Joanna Lumley's Dad had an M1 carbine in Burma.

Your man wouldn't need much ammo, company OC's shouldn't need to fire their weapon much.
