Hi everyone, I dont know if this is relevant to this thread (i.e. Canloan), but I recently read about a number of canadian officers loaned to No.2 coldstream guards in Medjez el Bab in jan 1943. Is there a resource I should be aware of that might help me find out more about this?
Phaethon - I too had heard of Canloans being in North Africa but - I was shot down as the OFFICIAL start of the scheme was after Sicily sometime so I walked away from the arguement as I had no formal evidence - but I am still sure they were at Medjez... Cheers

Cheers Well, you can argue with the official war diary from Jan 1943 Tom. Five of the buggers were sent over to 2 CG. Perhaps this was before the official scheme...but nether the less a loan of Canadian officers for war experience. That is to say a loan of canadians but not a Canloan.
Hello all, Can anyone help with this one? I'd be very interested to know if Lt Joseph Maurice ROUSSEAU (1st Canadian Para) was a CANLOAN officer when he moved over to 2nd SAS Regt just before D-Day. Also does anyone know where I can find out his service number? His brother, Joseph Philippe Rousseau was killed on 07/06/44 with 1st Canadian Para having taken over command of his brother's section. Joseph Maurice either died of wounds or was executed at Avricourt in eastern France on 20/09/44. Cheers Skip
Phaethon- I knew that there were Canadians in North Africa - but I don't usually argue with those stiff necked people who have read a book and thus know everything - it was fairly obvious that most of the five Canadian divisions sitting in the Uk had never heard a shot fired until Dieppe in the Aug '42 so something had to be done to teach them...unlike the Americans who landed at Torch pure green in the main- whereas the British 78th- 6th -1st and 46th Divs Armoured had some experienced people amongst them ! The 1st Cdn Division's entry into Sicily straight from the Uk was a last minute thing as they replaced 3rd British Div which was awaiting orders in Cairo - the Maj.Gen of 1st Cdn - Salmonds - was killed with most of his staff in flying out to liase with them and so Guy Symonds took over - and did a great job - at least in my view ! Cheers

Can't find any mention of him as having been a CanLoan officer. From the Canadian Vet Affairs website. And Joseph Phillipe ROUSSEAU
I have recently acquired 'Some Letters and Writings' by Donald 'Dunc' Albert Duncan, a CANLOAN Lt in A Coy, 4 Welch. He was killed in July 9th, and it offers a fantastic and illuminating insight into the life, and ultimately death of a young CANLOAN officer.
From memory - study periods. Montgomery and the Canadian Generals, Montgomery wanted to use them under direct command eg, split up commands and use them as he would his own units. The Canadian generals had to clear all orders with the Canadian government. This infuriated Montgomery who whilst remaining on friendly terms, was not best pleased until he worked with Guy Simmonds a general Montgomery respected, once one of Monty's boys - the Masters Team - Simmonds got Montgomery's ear and his support. Phaethon. It is possible -I have not looked yet, That officers' loaned to Guards regiments may have come from sister regiments - The Governor General of Canada's Foot Guards or the Canadian Grenadier Guards.
