Under the National Service (Armed Forces) Act 1939 all men were liable from their 18th birthday up to the day before their 41st birthday. Under the National Service (Armed Forces) (No 2) Act 1941 the upper limit was extended to the day before the 51st birthday. Liability was always subject to a variety of exemptions under a variety of procedures.
