When our National Anthem is about the flag, could you expect any different?

I do give good credit to you for your flag. It certainly is a lot easier to discern than the variation on the the three horizontal stripes so often seen in European flags.

Now I am going to have to go back and look at the pics I made several years ago of the British, er, uh Commonwealth Cemetery here and see if a Union Flag is on a pole there.

When watching the F1 podium ceremony on tv my mates used to always ask me if flag the correct way around.
Now they have that new style podium there isnt that problem.

Just thinking about the Australian flag, when it's hung down against a flat surface the Union flag is the wrong way around.

    See here.
Flags Fantastic - Flag Protocol & Display
    FLAT AGAINST A SURFACE
When displayed against a wall or flat surface or hung in a window, the first quarter should be placed in the top left position as seen by the observer.

Well, it had been raining the day I took the photos. There are flag poles there, but no flags. I guess I will need to make trip back over there and see what is flying. It is probably British and French flags since that is what is buried in the plot.

'Old Nazis', or modern neos? One suspects the latter with that thing.

This one (at least marked as 'reproduction') is the right way up.
Any Militaria types know anything about the original such badges? If there ever were originals.

I like a couple of the comments in that BBC article:

'Mr Bainimarama, a former coup leader who was elected last year in Fiji's first elections in eight years,'
Probably says a great deal and:

'The current Fiji flag is light blue with the union jack - also known as the union flag - and a shield with the cross of St George and a lion. It also features a sugar cane, bananas, a palm tree and a dove of peace.'
So take off the Colonial elements and what are you left with?

sugar cane, bananas, a palm tree and a dove of peace.
    Sounds like a great flag.

The UJ (or more correctly Union Flag) seems to have become an even more iconic symbolor image in recent years around the world, and also something of a fashion accessory. I am not sure I am entirely happy with that but at least it puts 'our' flag (sorry Jeff) possibly ahead of 'Old Glory' as a recognisable symbol of a national identity (not that the fashionistas might recognise it for that).

Does anyone know how many former colonies, dominions or protectorates flags still include the Union Flag? Bermuda still does and voted to keep it.

    Cheers for that Nanette.

Interesting that the link does not show the sugar cane, bananas, a palm tree and a dove of peace.on the Fiji flag.
