My mother just told us a story that I haven't heard before. She said that one her teachers, Miss Comfort, often forgot to bring her cigarettes to school. She only lived a block from school and would ask mom to go to her house to get them during lunch break. She had told mom the house key was in a flowerpot on the porch. On one cigarette run she saw another teacher, Miss Tuesdale, on the sidewalk crying. When mom asked her what was the matter she said that her boyfriend had been killed in action. Mom said she ran back to tell Miss Comfort and then she and the other teachers went outside to help her. Here is mom with her Uncle George in the fall of 1941 just before he shipped out to Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. They didn't see him again until 1945. He was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association.
