Hi My great-grandfather is listed as being in the BMTSD in and around 1939/1940 I believe he was part of the RASC at this time. I've seen BMTSD listed as either 'Base Motor Transport Supply Depot' or 'Base Mechanical Transport Stores Depot'. Does anyone know if they were the same thing, or different? I know he was am ambulance driver during the war. Thank you Catherine
Hello Do you have his service records Get a copy of military service records this will give you more info on his service Regards Clive
Hi Clive, Yes I do - it just says BMTSD for his unit, it doesn’t say what it stands for which is a pain!
if you posted the records on here it might give a bit more context to his postings and forum members might be able to assist further for info below ROYAL ARMY SERVICE CORPS - Introduction Motor transport units rasc
Thank you very much - here are the relevant parts of the service record if anyone fancies having a crack at it. Thank you
Thank you - I had thought thought it was that, but I saw this on the National Archives website which threw me off course http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C791265
And then there's this which says it's Mechanical Transport Stores - BBC - WW2 People's War - Alfred Buchanan Fletcher — Early days of BEF in France
Catherine, I agree that it is Mechanical Transport Stores Depot - 'The Story of the Royal Army Service Corps 1939-45'. Regards Bruneval
I think there has been a name change here. During WW1 (and prior), MTSD stood for Mechanical Transport Stores Depot but it changed at some stage and certainly by the time of the BEF in WW2 it stood for Motor Transport Stores Depot. Tim
