Mad Mike Calvert was very partial to laying these types of traps in 1942-43 during the Burma Retreat and Chindit 1, the trouble was, he failed to remeber where he had set up such devices and this made for a very nervous and careful return journey.

One starving Chindit in late April 1943 saw a ham hung up on a hook in what seemed like a deserted village, hunger getting the better of him he charged for the meat. His best mate ran after him to trying to prevent him from grabbing the meat, sadly both went up together.

In the same theatre the North Kachin Levies used the 'punji stick' against the Japanese with great effect. See this link for a description of the booby trap:

Thought I'd give this thread a bump.

It was one of my very early offerings and the successful solving of a query that I posed was probably the main reason for my continuing to post on this super forum.

I was GOOGLING this morning and strictly on a whim decided to see if I could find an image of the 19 set Arial base to compare it with the Jerry magnetic mine.

    I found this: https://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&site=imghp&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1517&bih=741&q=19+set+arial+base&oq=19+set+arial+base&gs_l=img.12...5655.15353.0.17508.17.7.0.10.10.0.71.412.7.7.0....0...1ac.1.52.img..10.7.412.ulRbZVAUYog#hl=en&q=ww2+19+set+arial+base&tbm=isch&facrc=_&imgdii=_&imgrc=jqhQ6YJjhNbZ9M%253A%3BmzGkJ6CPGPCGaM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fi.ebayimg.com%252F00%252Fs%252FMTU4MFgxNjAw%252Fz%252FtZcAAOxykMpTJ2ai%252F%2524_35.JPG%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.ebay.co.uk%252Fitm%252FWireless-Set-19-WS19-Aerial-Base-No8-Mk1-ZA1763-%252F201054627223%3B300%3B296

I also found this group of German Ant-Tank Grenades

Relieved to see that I wasn't such an idiot after all :)

    Hi,

    In more modern times.

During the Dhofar Campaign 1969 - 1975 some really "dirty tricks" where played by our side.

One invloved observing an Addoo (enemy) patrol.

The Addoo would bring parts of an 81mm Mortar to the entrance of the Wadi Jarsis in prep for a harrasing shoot at night against a"Hedgehog".

The mortar baseplate would be dug in after survey, then camouflaged first.

The remainder of the mortar and the ammunition would be brought down in successive nights.

However, the British Army Training Team aka BATT (Hereford PO Box 69) would carefully decam the baseplate and insert an anti tank mine underneath the baseplate, then re cam the baseplate.

We often woundered sometimes how in the middle of the night there would be a sudden violent explosion in the distance entrance to the wadi.

    Another "Trick"

Involved leaving a full FN Rifle Magazine on a rock.

The magazine had the top round emptied of it's normal propellent which was replaced with Plastic Explosive.

The Addoo prized ownership of a captured FN Rifle and would pick up and load the tampered with magazine.

Firing the top round ended up with a breach explosion and usualy a headless Addoo.

It wasn't till after the Counterinsergency that we were told what was being done.

    I hope I havn't hijacked the Topic.
