World War Two: We Were There Ahead of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War Two, in 2025, the BBC is trying to gather as many first-hand accounts from surviving veterans as possible, to preserve them for future generation. Working with a number of partners, including the Normandy Memorial Trust and the Royal British Legion, the BBC has already spoken to many men and women who served during the War - you can watch their testimonies here. We Were There aims to collect as many first-hand accounts as possible by 2025, the 80th anniversary of the end of World War Two, to preserve veterans' accounts for future generations. The regional BBC TV had this clip of a 14th Army signaller today. See: Ted Woodward: 'We were the forgotten army' I'd missed the BBC publicity for this and the website currently shows a variety of very short video clips. See: We Were There: World War Two
I'm quite surprised at the current format as to how the interviews are presented. Going via : We Were There: World War Two ...there isn't much explanation as to what each interview deals with at the top level - at least, and there doesn't yet seem to an obvious way to select which you might wish to view next, other than going from one to the next and just seeing what each is about. These are perhaps a better introduction... We Were There, The North African Campaign: www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p0fm26yc via @bbciplayer And presumably there will be more in this line, by campaign or topic - i.e. home front as time goes by. This says "Episodes" - so it's a start... BBC News - We Were There
It's already too late. Not to say every scrap saved doesn't have some worth, but I've seen a few such projects over the last year or so and all I can think is that it's Johnny-come-lately stuff. 'People's War' was timed about right, and the BBC seem to have consigned that to a grudgingly preserved bucket site. The World at War was timed perfectly when the interviewees were the right age to have solid recollection while surrounded by other contemporaries to give a varied view (There are a lot of TWaW interviews beyond the aired ones. Mounds. I've a book of some edited selections but hopefully that wider archive will become more accessible one day), We did OK preserving Ron, Gerry, Tom etc's perpectives too, I think, within our limitations. It is what it is, but much of this later stuff strikes me as thin vanity projects more to do with the 'look at us being worthy' box-ticking side of the Internet than the actual people who fought the war.
I was enjoying this until it turned into an advert about "Rogue Heroes" - about half way through (10m20s) - BBC News - We Were There, The North African Campaign Not that I didn't enjoy "Rogue Heroes" but this insert was plainly an advert for it... and that just felt a bit ott and odd, to me. I think I'd usually expect to see that sort of thing tagged on afterwards.
Interesting to see - Sahara with Michael Palin, 4. Dire Straits: www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0074p5v via @bbciplayer Includes interviews / conversations with WW2 veterans around Tobruk at around 11mins in.
As an aside, if I search for the word "reel" at IWM with filters "Show only records with digitised media", "Second World War", and "Sound" I get the top three results as shown in the third screenshot attached. i.e. "Oral History", "Lucas, Dorothea etc.", "Kagan, Jack etc." Does everybody who repeats this search, wherever thee may be, get the same return of search? LATER EDIT: The answer is affirmative according to someone in London. There appear to be 5495 tapes - but there are more at IWM, which are not available online. IWM Collections
This is a version of the first 30 search returns at IWM as set out above, with names and catalogue number. Because IWM use rather large typefaces you have to scroll and click several times.
