    Hi

This is a family photograph of my Grandfather who was in the 22nd Dragoons and was killed in Wuurstwezel, Belgium on the 22/10/1944. The photograph was taken on the 22/04/1944. Can anyone identify the badge he is wearing on his right arm or any other insignia he is wearing?

    Thanks

    Simon

It's a badge of Rank. Warrant officer class 2. If you google British army badges of rank you'll see where it sits on the scale of ranks.

The medal ribbon I think is the 39-45 star, which was originally issued as the 39-43 star.

    Thanks for that

I have only just learnt that the date of the photograph is the 22/04/1944.

I have his service record which says his rank was promoted to Corporal in June 1943 and later Lance Sergeant in October 1944 (shortly before he was killed). I am a bit surprised to learn that in April 1944 he was a Sergeant Major.

I have a note written by his wife that he was shipwrecked on D Day and went to France shortly after this date. His service record says 11/07/1944. There is nothing on his service record saying he was shipwrecked or promoted to Sergeant Major. From this is it likely that something is missing from the service record or should I dismiss the family note of a shipwreck. Is there a reason why his promotion to Sergeant Major does not show on his Service Record?

I have attached a copy of the relevant parts of his service record.

    Thanks

    Simon
