E' vicino a Firenze. There isn't an American Cemetery at Arezzo. It's near Florence. You should check out the American website to find this cemetery. The cemetery at Indicatore (Arezzo) is for British and Commonwealth servicemen. For information about the plane you need to look for a MACR on website Fold 3. You will need to know roughly when the plane came down. As far as American casualties were concerned, about half were rimpatriated at the end of the war. Saluti, Best wishes, Vitellino
How do you know that? To everyone else, I have sent Stefanone a messge suggesting we correspond directly.
I think the plane might have been a Baltimore (55 Squadron RAF) as there are three casualties buried in Arezzo War Cemetery, dates 15-16 July, when the squadron was based at Cecina ( ten minutes from where I live, incidentally). Does anyone have a copy of the war diary? I will repost on the War in the Air forum and will also contact CWGC to see if I can find out where the three causalites were concentrated from. They are: Vitelliino
Translated: according to what the locals remember it's difficult to determine the date, but a peasant farmer who was 40 years old at the time has recorded that he was pruning the olives, so it would have been April. In any case, it had four engines and there were ten crew members My comments. This rules out all the airmen buried in Arezzo War Cemetery (see attached)
Translated - (this is becoming a habit!!) according to me July is too far ahead, the locals talk about spring, pruning the olives, therefore March, April. ME Well, let's rule out these two Marauders and go back to the original idea of a Liberator or B-17, which probably came down in the spring when returning to base from a mission.
It should be the Baltimore FW364, hit by anti-aircraft near Verghereto on 15 July 1944 at around 11.30pm. Lt. J.E. Andrews (S.A.A.F.) Pilot; KIA; Lt. R.W. Harris (S.A.A.F.) Observer Navigator; POW; F / Sgt. M.G.
