I took these 06-04-2021 in a field just outside the Village of Glatton, Hunts. It was dedicated the day before. The rusty metal support was part of the wing structure of this aircraft. The flag was mine.
The above photographs were taken during, and after the dedication. All thanks to Jeremy Wright, the instigator of this wonderful memorial. During 2012, and following years, he used to fix a Poppy Cross to the tree seen in the background. As shown, in My last photograph above.
I took the above photographs in 1987-8. This Memorial is in the Conington Churchyard. Very close to Glatton airfield, so-called, as not to be confused with Coningsby airfield, Lincolnshire.
A lovely tribute. I'm only up the road. Always try to drive by the entrance on the old Great North Road.
Thanks LF, as all memorials there is a story to tell.....will look up the background to the loss of Miss Ida.. my thoughts on the identification of the aircraft part being used as the pillar for the memorial agree. Looks as if the part gave flexibility for the wing structure Interesting ex USAAF wartime airfields in the area and remember the point about naming Connington airfield as Glatton to avoid navigational confusion problems. There are many examples of this policy regarding airfield names to avoid confusion. Visited these airfields as my aunt lived in the area close to Glatton on the west side of the mighty Great North Road, then far from motorway status.
