Awarded Military Cross Captain James Montgomery, 2nd Bn Royal Ulster Rifles (P/176456) 9th Infantry Brigade, 3rd British Infantry Division, 1st Corps,

During an attack by 2 RUR on an enemy position at CAMBES on 9 June 1944, Captain MONTGOMERY was in command of ‘D’ Coy, having only taken over command on 8 June when his Company Commander was killed. On reaching the objective the Coy position was subjected to very severe mortar and shell fire, and both Capt MONTGOMERY and his 2nd i/c were wounded. Capt MONTGOMERY refused to have his wounds attended to until he saw that his Company was securely established on its objective, and he supervised this part of the operation with the utmost gallantry. The houses which ‘D’ Coy held during the consolidation of the objective were reduced to a mass of rubble but nevertheless the position was held, and the maintenance of the position was of paramount importance in the ultimate success of the Bn attack. The effect of Capt Montgomery’s gallant determination in ensuring that his company’s position was consolidated was a vital factor in the achievement by the Bn of its objective.
