Award Military Medal L/Sjt. Edward Frederick George Abbott, 2nd Bn Cheshire Regiment (6844135)

On 22nd March 1943 during the fighting in front of the Northern Sector of the Mareth Line No. 12 Platoon of "O" Coy 2nd Bn Cheshire Regiment was subjected to a period of intense shelling with very large calibre guns. During this shellfire a dugout containing the Platoon Commander Platoon Serjeant and Signaller received a direct hit which killed outright the Platoon Serjeant and Signaller but left the Platoon Commander unwounded but temporarily incapacitated by shock. Seeing what had happened from his Section Position close at hand Serjeant Abbott went over to Platoon H.Q. under heavy shellfire and took complete charge of the situation extricating the two bodies and Platoon Commander from the collapsed dugout.

Abbotts's disregard for his own personal safety under an intense barrage and his coolness, presence of mind and devotion to duty was not only of immense help to his Platoon Commander but also a very fine example to the rest of his Section.
