Award Military Cross Lt. Alastair Arthur Banks, (94689) DD Battery , 4 Regiment, Royal Horse Artillery, Middle East (Egypt and Libya)

On 9th July 1942 at Point 103 Map Reference 860274, Lt. BANKS was O.P. Officer, when he was outflanked by four tanks which were engaging the Bren Carrier behind him. At great risk of being cut off he stayed on his point of vantage long enough to bring a heavy concentration of the whole battery on to 50 MET following behind the tanks.
Then he personally directed his 6-pdr guns to another tank, which they knocked out. He continued to remain with two 6-pdrs to the flank of 4 enemy tanks while the battery engaged them over open sights and then, while under direct M.G. and Breda fire again on the main column while his 6-pdrs engaged the tanks direct from his O.P. This immediate concentration from the Battery in an entirely new position undoubtedly halted the enemy for several hours and altogether 2 tanks were destroyed during the action
