Margot Calvert's first husband was 903068 Sgt Harold Phillip Calvert, MiD, RAF, an observer with No. 10 Squadron. Calvert had been a constable with the British Columbia Provincial Police before enlisting in the RAF. Shot down in Whitley Z6805 near Bocholt, Netherlands 17 August 1941. All crew survived.

12 May 1942 Calvert and sidekick, R58101 Sgt Donovan Sugden of Armstrong, BC (W/Op on No. 104 Squadron) were part of the mass escape from Stalag IIIE. From Sugden's 2007 obituary:
The AIR81 file on this loss, held at Kew, goes into further detail. Calvert and Sugden were sleeping with their shoes and socks off when they were approached by a member of the Bahnschutzpolizei (railway police) and arrested. Told to raise their hands, Calvert asked for permission to put his socks and shoes on. He was promptly shot dead. The photograph in the AIR81 file is of Calvert with a full beard.

    Regards,

    Dave
